On the other side of this thing is a cable that was connected (I believe) to a stereo system I was removing. What is it for?

That looks like the mount for an external radio aerial.

Definitely the antennae base for either the VHF or 27meg radio.

Don't think i would be removing it unless you relocating the antennae.

That makes sense. I already have an antennae mounted at the top of the mast. Thanks

You loose the mast head antenna, there's your back up.
