was down the boat today doing some electrical work and in the process of stripping a wire with my tool knife my thumb nail got in the way and I sliced it all the way down the centre without knowing till I saw a red smudge under the nail. I have always used a meyerco sailors knife with a sheep's foot blade which I keep almost razor sharp . I say almost compared to my meatworks days where the boners and slicers knives were so sharp if you ran the blade down the arm lightly with the hairs it would takes the hairs off.
I can cut dyneema easily but was wondering if there are more modern designs ,perhaps serrated edges?
What do you use.

Ive been pretty happy with the GIL for a personal knife. Cuts through dyneema easily and the fid is pretty handy. The release is big and chunky as well.




The knives mounted in the cockpit and mast are cheap ceramic ones in sheaths, bit more resilient in all the salt.

Same tools as meyerco with serrated blade . I call it a marlin spike .
Ill have a look on Thursday at Whitworths.

That's a mean looking blade mate, I'm too clumsy to trust myself with that!!

Victorinox or Swibo was the blade of choice in the meatworks I was in.
Why? They could sharpen the blades so thin that the very edge was almost transparent and the edge would not split. They would hold it as well. Wife still uses wooden handle Victorinox skinning knife from 80,s
for everything almost .

Victorenox steak knife. Very cheap to buy online, so guaranteed you'll never loose it over the side! A small length of garden hose makes a perfect sheath, and can be taped to the tiller or a steering wheel spoke No rust in the blade after a few years in sheath in tiller. For a multitool I use a Gerber, about 12 the price of a Leatherman, but I haven't been able to fault the quality.

i currently use a couple of low-mid-range Myerchins:

i like that you can open/close them one-handed. and having had a sharp non-locking blade on a folder close on one of my fingers once upon a time, locking blades are the way to go, especially on a boat where you might get thrown around.

for stripping wires i almost always use a wire stripper these days, a decent one does a much better job, with less chance of nicking the wires.

Mate, Victorinox will never go out of business, its the pride and joy of Switzerland. Its the brand that makes all Swiss Army knives. You can get those kitchen knives in many different ashes and sizes. I have plenty on the boat. They sell for about $4-5 here in Zurich.

I've got the same one for myself shaggy. Had some weird surface rust on it, Gill swapped it over no questions asked (it's not supposed to get any).

I'm interested in the ceramic knives you've got though - where did you get them from?

You get them from Whitworths or any chandlery, they're about 20 bucks. They have a boring looking plastic handle and sheath, but the blade is ceramic and deadly sharp, goes through dyneema like butter.
If you just ask for a ceramic knife they'll point you in the right direction.

I buy my ceramic knives from Habitat or similar house store. $15 and nicer than the Whitworth ones.
Just a word of caution on the ceramic knives, they will snap very easily if used to wedge at all!!

+1 for the victorinox, for a super sharp edge that last a super long time, there not super hard to sharpen
