Varnish advice please

I need to renew the interior varnish on the sides of my companionway. I'm thinking a brush coat or two of an epoxy base, then a varnish on top. Waterproof and UV resistant. Also it must be a matt or at most a satin finish to match the rest of the interior. What's the bees knees do you reckon?

Ive been impressed by Monocel, easy to apply and available from the big green shed, (Bunnings) at reasonable price.

Did something similar with a cockpit grate; covered with 3 coats of epoxy, then 3-4 coats of varnish. Finished up looking very nice. Main issue I wanted to do was sealing from moisture, it was constantly sitting in water and sections had rotted and had to be replaced. With the last coat I sprinkled some grit so it would not be slippery


The 2nd photo shows the finish before the grit

Thanks, I'll check that out. Do you know if you have to sand between coats or can you do a few in succession without sanding?

That's looking pretty waterproof. Which varnish did you use?

I'm using Cabot's CFP oil based clear on everything. Says two coats over bare wood on the tin but I have been doing 3.

It's for interior floors and is hard wearing. Not sure about the UV bit. Lasts well with the sun through windows.

I found the international Gold Spar good, but the satin is too lower gloss, so I mixed gloss and satin together
Cabots have a nice satin, matched the Bavaria varnish well, funny I have painted over my companion way side in off white, the sun through the clear hatch had blotched the wood.

Ok thanks, that's a contender. I want that really low gloss to match the rest of the interior, so this could work.

That product looks to be an oil finish not a varnish or a clear finish. My fishing vessel had the cabin in an oil finish and there are lots of advantages over a varnish. The quarter tonner I fitted out I also used the same oil finish and just needed a topping up every now and again.
I used outdoor furniture oil.

Light sand between coats, nothing dramatic, 300 grit or so, just to knock down the timber fibres that are drown out with the coating. Wipe dust off with a tac rag. Make sure each coat is 110% dry before doing a subsequent coat.

I ended up going for the Monocel satin. Exterior use and good UV resistance. A lot of the others didn't have as good UV resistance for their satin version, only their gloss version. It's pretty tedious doing this kind of work in Tas with our low temps over winter. One coat a day kind of slow.
