Hi

I am about to purchase an underwater camera that i can trow over the side of the boat to inspect my propellor and hull, also to look for fish and record dolphins.

I considered just making a waterproof housing, inserting security camera and hooking it up to my laptop, however, the cost of all this seems to be around the same price as some ready made ones.

That 1 meter one might be the thing my plumbers use to check around pan traps and inside walls for studs and leaks. It's not a bad thing.o

Are you wanting to see the pictures live? If so, I don't know much about it, except that with the GoPro's you need either the new Hero3 which will stream to a smart phone or I think the Hero 2 has a backpack that adds this feature but then it prolly won't fit in the housing. Not sure how water will effect streaming (via wifi, I think).

I like this idea and it would be a nice thing to be able to do. I bought a hero2 and am very impressed with the quality of the video but note that there's not even a playback function - have to upload to PC or device first.

Biggest problems with underwater video and photography is poor visibility in water with lots of suspended particles and lack of light. Still, you can do what you're wanting to do in most conditions as long as you don't expect great vision.

I will be using it between dunsborough and busselton. Geographe bay is usually crystal clear water. At the moment i am using an inverse periscope, basically just a pvc pipe with a lens that i dip in the water from the boat. Its like snorkelling and works well, however, i need to get down to 30m and look around.

Looks like i wont buy that yellow thing if its terrible quality.

Will just put a CCTV camera in a water tight tube.

Looks like a good cheap cam. Would be great for my snorkelling adventures but need about 25m depth for my camera on a rope idea.

I'll just build :P
