The comments went on to say that it was a Catalina design and was useful to give rudder authority when the boat was rounding up..

I gave up reading the page to know how many models where built like this or even if it was successful. My Catalina certainly didn't have this design rudder.

Thats for doing handbrake turns. Perhaps when being chased by naval architects?

Trying to think of something funny to write but just can't.
I'm trying to picture whats going on when the boat has a bit of heel and weather helm. It could only get worse the more heel and helm you have.

The flaw is that the pivot is not in line with the axis of the blade. Large increase in drag when you turn the wheel/tiller.
