Mawson has a double dark blue pin stripe along the shear line. These are two vinyl stripes and starting to get worn and nicked. The boot stripe is also a dark blue but painted on, this is looking really worn with successive scrubbing and polishing. So I'm needing to reinstate all these and wondering if I might do the boot stripe as vinyl too or just do them all in paint. What are your thoughts on the pro's and cons of going with vinyl or painting on stripes (GRP hull, still a gel coat finish). Also I got wondering about what he boot stripe is actually for if anyone knows?

Paint is best. With paint you can touch up when it gets that inevitable scratch or scrape. Just stick to stock colours. The boot stripe could be there to hide the scum marks I guess but I think it's mainly for appearance. I reckon it should be standard fit on classic looking yachts.

I know what you mean, it always seems to be the highest growth area. so did you take the antifoul up to the top of where your red boot stripe was?

Bunnings sell them.

vinyl comes off pretty easily with a little bit of heat. use a gas torch if you don't have shore power. i've never used a caramel wheel but i assume that they make a mess.

Not the whole hull mate, just the sides. Its the grey colour in the picture, you may be able to see the flatness. There is a torn section forrard you can see that I have to replace when they slinged the boat and didn't use any padding, but other than that it's unbroken, just drab.

Yeah, I was hoping for more than three years, it's not totally trashed but it's lost its sheen and no amount of polish seems to correct it. I know when I had it done they told me they used above average quality Avery Dennison vinyl but not the best you can buy, as the higher end 3M vinyl was just poisonously expensive.

The problem seems to be the high UV in Qld, it's sucked the shine out of it and sadly the resultant flatness isn't uniform.
I'm not familiar with a silicon finish? Does this just put a gloss finish on the existing product?
It'd be fantastic not to pull it all off, kinda difficult job if it's sitting in a cradle.

Caramel wheel is TOO small for your job.
Heat is the way to go. 2 people on heat guns, one from the top and one from below, and another on the vinyl. Heat and pull in one long go. Getting a start with a good leading edge of heat as you pull will make it an easier job.
Talk to a vehicle wrap company for tips on BIG surfaces. The sooner it is removed after it is applied, the easier it comes off.

I would say the grey was a good colour choice for longevity, but agree the Qld UV is fierce. The company I work for supplies the truck bodies for the Woolworth's home deliveries, and down south the green wrap looks fine after 5 years, but not so, the ones I spotted on the Gold Coast.
the clear wrap maybe worth making enquires about? If this would restore a lustre to your grey, and the grey wrap is still serviceable.
i would talk to one of the decent vehicle wrap companies.

That was really interesting, I never knew ceramic coating existed for boats. Reading the blurb last night, I noted with interest that it also provides streakless protection for windscreens and windows. On the 2nd to last Volvo race I was swapping emails with one of their on board reporters who was looking for a treatment to mitigate salt build up on the on deck camera bubble protectors. I wonder if this could help with that problem?

When I last had my boat detailed they tried to get me to coat the boat with ' System X' . It was very expensive and I was not prepared to pay out that sort of money without proof it works, so they did my 2 gelcoat deck halyard covers as a sample. Thank god I didn't fork out over $3,000.00 just to do the deck as it did not last 6 months before the gelcoat started to dull off. It was no better than a good quality wax. 2bish it doesn't ever last half of what the say unless you park your boat in a shed.
