The story at the time was the cat loved to swim. The rope was left over the side by the cruisers so he could get back unaided.

To be fair it does work.

Came across this picture on the web with no explanation.

Wonder if this is just wind on bare poles whether perhaps they are all also aground. You wouldn't however expect three yachts to all anchor in too shallow water.
The power boat on the right doesn't seem to be affected despite its Bimini and the yacht to the left presumably because it is heading straight into the wind. The central yacht seems to have an unsecured halliard as well. Kind of a funny pic because it looks like they are racing with bare poles at first sight.

Keels on bottom, preventing boats from turning into wind.
