Driving over Vince's saddle to get to DSS for a winter series race on the Derwent in the Thompson 7.
It is not too often you call to say "I will at the boat as soon as they clear the snow and open the road!

South West of Bruny Island Dec. 1980.
Scary place . We went a bit to far south after rounding Maatsuyker and had hell of a time on Port tack for eight hours then tacked through 30degrees!! After travelling from memory about 4 miles had a sleigh ride . Got so excited I took photos of the smooth ride . I can only guess we were right on the edge of the East Australian Current.

Grey old morning ,steaming up the lower channel to get my head down before the forecast gale later this morning. On the sled this morning the boats struck in port Davey are requesting more food to be flown in they have been stuck there that long. They will not get out for bit either. You can walk out a few days or you can fly out in the Cessna 210 over the mountain in a westerly gale assuming the plane can land at mellelucca .
69 knots at matsyker on the sked but 10 knots only 20 miles north in the channel. Like I said it is all about the weather.

Turning into Barnes Bay.

Tip: If you coming cruising down here bring four times the number of fenders you think and make them three times the size you think you will need . And put heavy lines on them. I carry ten all up with the biggest been 300mm diameter. And remember a stout fender board a good 3 metres long. Wharf piling is often 2 metres.
There are very few marinas and fishing wharves tend to have great deal of surge even on quite days.
Even the marina in the centre of town, you moor the boats facing into the wall of the dock so the boats take the surge backwash off the wall bow on.
That help S&S?

It's a beautiful, wild State. However, when you need a bit of R&R .....

These are the excellent Sullivans Cove MAST moorings. Free for 5 hours and space for 9 vessels. Slap bang in the heart of everything.

We did the Saturday Salamanca market, the Sunday farmers market, our washing in the groovy Machine Cafe, fish and chips from one of the 7 or so purveyors and our supermarket restock.

Almost ready to face the wilds again!

Cheers

Don't call it Hells Gates for nothing.
Only about 80 metres of which 40 is navigable.
Pretty much all of Macquarie Harbour which is many time bigger than Sydney Harbour drains through there.
It is also surprisingly shallow at about 4 m

If you need longer you would fit in Con dock.
Nothing beats Hobart for inner city facilities.
Whereas Sydney, the so called harbour city is one of the worst.

Not my pic but from a pic library of some sort but this gives you best idea.
The Harbour is about 20 miles long and about 5 miles wide in most places.
Parts are 50m deep while a lot is 25m plus.

Rather the opposite of all the pretty views - Mount Wellington from Prince of Wales marina. According to BOM observations, it did not get above zero up there all day

Storm warning for S.E. and S.W. today - Gale warning every where else!
