Hi crew

I'm a complete newbie for trailer sailer craft.
Can anyone provide advise on what to look for on a SS22 that I'm looking at?
It's a fixer but I"m prepared to make it a project to bring back life to a sailer.

Any thoughts on an alternative would be gratefully received.

Most Spacesailers are in WA Philip. Is that where your at? Is this a fixed keeler on a trailer or lifting keel version. Only thing I can tell you is they are big 22 footers and usually good value.

Im guessing your looking at the one on the Sunshine Coast ?
If so figure on 5grand plus for starters . If the centreboard is cast iron it's probably rusted and in need of dropping out . Interior stripped and all instruments gone . Figure on electrics need replacing . Don't forget the trailer. It could cost a dollar or two to get it registered. Then there's the running rigging and sails.
Start with the car your going to pull it with. What is its tow capacity. It's no good buying something tha needs a bigger car.
I understand they are a very good boat with a very strong following in

SS22 are cheap and built like tanks, you can pick one up for 2-4k and in pretty good nick over here.
I know of 2 that are up for sale in pens and you could sail them away no problems.
Cast iron keel fixed, not a trailer sailer but great value for money.
They are a popular class for racing, a cheap way to get into it.

I have a trailable S22 in southern Tas which I will sell for around the value of trailer plus outboard.

it is unique in having been upgraded to a larger fractional rig.

Spacesailer 22s won an "Australia Design Award" back in the early 80s and were produced in big numbers with many still racing here in WA in clubs, and still as a fleet at one Perth club.
As mentioned before built like tanks, reliable and plenty of room below.
Fixed Keel model handles strong breezes easily and can be sailed fairly well short handed, though do have large overlapping Genoa as their #1 with a slightly overlapping #2
