Plywood decks doesn't sound great! Any known issues with plywood decks?

It looks ok from the photos, it could be ideal or you SS?, also considering the owner might swap with you too, I'm kind of interested in it myself.

Just means you need to check them out, and be careful when adding new deck fixtures by doing the oversize hole then filling and re-drilling thing.

Not all have timber decks, some have glass decks. Should be easy to check. BlueMoon is right though, if you're careful about new deck fittings and make sure the old ones are in good repair, a timber deck isn't that much of an issue.

JBear will soon see this and give you the good oil. From what he's told me about them (I've been looking at either a Swanson 32 or 36 for about a year now) they'd be perfect for pretty much any trip you want to take them on. There are others of course, but the Swannys are a grand boat for sure.

I was the previous owner of Magic Carpet. The photo's do not do it justice. It would certainly need to have the hull and topsides painted but the interior is in quite good condition and a very practical and usable design. The decks are ply so the previous sound advice, from BlueMoon, would apply. It has a near new main and the foresail was recently serviced with new UV and a couple of panel sections replaced. I agree with Ramona that lazy jacks and a stack pack would be good additions. It was only sold last year in November so PM me if you would like to chat and I also have some photo's I can pass on.

Not sure I'm keen on a ply deck though...

RE ; Plywood decks
Built the Swanson 32 "Jia" she had the Swanson 36 coachhouse and cockpit. Her deck was laminted orgeon deck beams with 3 layers of marine grade plywood dynal sheathed glued and nailed etc. as specified by Swansons. extremely strong .
The only problem with this construction is ,if the deck fittings are not sealed properly water will leak into the end grain overtime and this is where the rot / soft spots occur
This will happen on a glass deck as most have plywood glassed in where deck fittings go so you end up with delaination in the deck if the fittings move under load etc.
My opinion is there is nothing wrong with a plywood deck as long as they were constructed properly and maintained.
Another point most of the Swansons with plywood decks were done by professionals or amateur boatbuilder . Ive seen some rough fiitted out Swansons and ones with blisters but never a structural unsound one.
Swanson yachts are now 30 plus going on 50 plus in years in the glass ones heavily constructed and solid even though most where amateur built to an extent Swanson did have staff on site to supervise this operation.

Have a Swanson 38 that we built from the hull and deck stage, now 36 years old .
