Went and had a look at a Swanson 27 yesterday , looked interesting in the photos, but has been for sale for a awhile so had it in the back of the head not to get excited.
first impressions as I walked up to it was run down very bad paint job rigging was very old and of course the plywood decks .
BUT what I was amazed about was the heavy duty ness of the Swanson 27 for A JOG yacht it is a tank compared to many others but still a ballerina and fine sailing yacht
unless someone has first hand information I cannot find any information on them
it has a bolted on keel is it cast or lead?
how much ballast?? it is very very good incredibly stiff.
not much of a fit out and even with the plywood decks I just can't get her out of my head , is there any people who know any information on the Swanson 27 ???

Hi Z, my family owned a 27 for 30+ years, you can go anywhere in one and it won't let you down. As for the keel, the top 1/2 is a deep bilge fully moulded to the hull and the bottom 1/2 is lead bolted on, ours took a few pretty hard groundings and never any problems with the bolts. Most of the boats with the bubble cabins had glass decks, I think the 32 may of had plywood ?

The cockpit and bubble cabin are fibreglass. Just the deck is plywood.

Now this is getting confusing the bubble looked to me to be plywood glassed over riverrider who owned one says glass decks ???

Cabin is glass, I've drilled a heap of holes and never found any ply, also drilled holes in foredeck for anchor winch and mast was keel stepped with no sign of ply round the holes, there was no supports under the deck apart from the main bulkhead, but it could be possible that some had ply decks.

Inside underneath the deck - the deckhead - is there any dry rot evident and are the timber support beams ok? Sounds like this boat is waiting for the right person to snap it up, fix it up with a bit of labour and suitable materials without over capitalising, and enjoy it. Still serviceable Etchells sails (cut down main luff) should fit ok and then just need a 130% genoa for the light breezes.

No.2 headsail makes the kite a bit more controllable in some breeze.

R13 sorry mate I never saw this post of yours very good questions it seemed very strong through the whole deck I wouldn't be surprised if it was all glass that was quite a revelation when I found out they where glass, apparently she was sailed around Australia by a lady 2 owners ago.

I found her on Facebook marketplace. Taking delivery this Sunday. I know she needs work but I'm cool with that. Seems solid and I've read nothing but good reports on them.
