A boat on a neighbouring mooring lost its mast at some point this week. I went over for a closer inspection and saw about a foot of barnacles on her bottom. This boat has obviously been ignored for years and will probably sink or break free of the mooring soon.

I'd be happy to take over ownership of this Magnum 8.5 and bring it back to its former glory. I guess it will need new mast and rigging, new sails, new trailer, new motor, new running rigging and a ton of elbow grease.

Anybody know the owner?

Does it have any stickers/notices from the local maritime services? Take the buoy number and some photos into the local BO and get the owners name there. They probably wont give you the owners details but they will pass on your details to the owner and then he can contact you if he wants to.

If the mast fell over the side, then dragging a light anchor should find it. Or do you mean that the yacht has attracted the attention of thieves?

Judging by the mess the stanchions are in on the port side I'd say the mast broke or the stays went and the mast was banging against the hull. There a gap in the barnacles where something was rubbing. Maybe marine safety cut it free to save the boat. The boom is neatly stored on the starboard side.

Given that you acknowledge the list of requirements to get her going again you will probably find it cheaper to buy a reasonable boat requiring minimal work and go sailing.
