Lydia prompted me to not only drag out my old lifeboat sextant but commence the restoration of a proper metal one. So the sextant and mechanical chronometer showed us the way for 200+years. Then electronics changed the world of navigation. From the mechanical chronometer we advanced to the electronic one such as the Omega f300hz and then the quartz then the .. The sextant jumped from it ,I believe, to radar and gps in a hurry although a top sextant manufacturer Plath did design and build an electronic prototype sextant . So whats next?
For example we rely on batteries be it rechargeable or throw aways to make it all operate . Could it be small nuclear batteries ? If I had a bigger boat I reckon I would ditch the gps and .oh well.

What's next?
Elon Musk's neuralink!

No need for a physical interface like a screen.
Any information that you need will be up loaded to your brain directly.
As aural, graphic, written or sensual signals.
Basically, a smart watch in our brains connected to a much more advanced "internet"
Think a course, speed correction and the boat will respond!
Want to know the engine temp or oil pressure?

Whoopee!!! NOT!!!!

That's a couple of classics you have there BB. We use a plastic Davis for vertical angle / distance off on the training boat & it's guaranteed to attract attention

Nothing new here, the very best navigators I have known, could take a 4 hour rest, wake up and know exactly where the boat was.
Or if the helmsman got off track they would be awake going what the wtf.
So no need for the tech.
