The Singer thing is a cult. Oh yeah, at first you just start trying one for sailmaking. Then you find the next Singer has a nice wooden cabinet. After that, it's all downhill. You start talking to sailmakers who are into Singers, and they get you into the really hard stuff. You start scatchin' everytime someone posts one on the internet, and mumble with strange people who are also into Singers. It turns out that the cult has spread its tentacles very widely.

Meanwhile, your poor suffering partner ends up with a house full of Singers.

Come on, kids, say not to Singers. It's the only safe way out. 'Specially for Kankama, who has a sister in law who is already a high priestess of the inner circle of the Singer cult.

PS - apparently the 319 is a great machine but needs special needles or a modification to the bobbin case. You can learn more if you join the cult; send a vial of blood and your first born child.

Also look at the Jenome MW3018, it's a current model and works well as long as you don't go to super thick cloth.

This is correct. The correct needles are hard to get, not cheap, and don't come in useful sizes. There is a modification to the bobbin case that can be done (takes a bit of grinding) but this isn't hugely successful. Nice machines but not worth the trouble.

I have two Singer machines. One is an industrial 20U and the other an old foot pedal job that was my mothers. It will sew through anything. The needles are easy to come by and I buy mine from Vardmans.

what is the bobbin mod for?
just for pressure, or some magical increase in capacity?

Standard capacity bobbins (made worse by thick thread) is the work of satan's mum.

The bobbin mod provide clearance for the needle in zig-zag mode. Doing the mod allows you to use a non standard (and easier to obtain) needle. The mod was fairly easy with a dremel tool. Or you can just do straight stitch and not mod.

I am looking for something I can do sailbags and maybe a boom cover with for now and then take it cruising next year, so it can't be too big.

Singer Capri - $85

Cheers

The cult says go for a 319 which has two-stitch zig zag. Apparently Singer went plastic in the '70s and the inner circle believes they are not true Singers.

Fun fact - Mortimer Singer was a sailor who had a 23 Metre, later converted to a J Class. At one stage he considered getting two of these 130 foot racing machines, one for light winds and one for strong winds. Here endeth the trivia.

My industrial Singer was made in Japan. They are also made in China. There is the usual debate on which is the better quality.

This is a top loading bobbin.

I recon you need a side loading one. No need for a cabinet.

The el. paddle might be buggered for low speed due to graphite disks inside. A new one is about $100-150 for oldies.
