The Savage Tern is the only aluminium yacht tender ever made as far as I know.
Savage should have another Tern at making them. I am sure they would sell a shipload of them.
Hi Cisco
What makes the Tern any better as a yacht tender than any other similar size tinny available either in the past or now
You are the second person who has told me they are a good thing but I am not sure why this is the case
Regards Don
It is their shape. Most tinnies have either a sharp bow or a blunt bow as in a pram dinghy.
The sharp bow has little buoyancy in the bow and will usually have a V bottom which has little stability unless planing. It also has to be longer to have the same buoyancy as the Tern. About the shortest tinnie you can buy today will be nine and a half feet and hardly any of them can be rowed efficiently.
The blunt bowed tinnies usually have very low freeboard and are usually intended for crabbing in rivers etc. They obviously do not cut the water well, slapping and pounding in a chop and in a swell will scoop the wave into the boat.
Your Tern is only 8 foot long isn't it?? It has a rounded bow which will cut the water well at slow speed ie when rowing and yet have good buoyancy in the bow. I am sure it would be rated for 3 people and up to 8 hp and would row well. It has a more rounded bottom rather than flat or V.
Yours with the added on float pads on the sides is quite perfect. The yacht dinghy shape made in aluminium is a big draw card.
If you want to get rid of it for a couple of hundred bucks, I will take it off your hands.
