Hey all,
As it's the end of the (main) part of the season, I'm starting to plot out my maintenance for the coming months. Jumping the gun a little, I'll probably want an antifoul sometime around September-ish.
I've been going to Gladesville Bridge Marina with my old boat and they were surprisingly good on price (around $1300 all up), but that was for a 22ft boat. I've now got a Flying Tiger 10, so don't think I'd even make it up their slip.
Always worth checking around on prices anyways - what sort of $/ft are you guys paying. Also open to taking the boat up to either Pittwater or down to Broken Bay, which I've never had the option of before, so interested if there's much price variation there.
In July 2024 at White Bay 6 near Balmain, it cost me as below. Per foot and per meter is my calculation given 40ft/12m boat
Item
Lift, Stand and Launch $599.21 $14.98/ft $49.93/m
Pressure Blast $203.94 $5.10/ft $17.00/m
Environmental Levy $143.70
Altex no.5 2 coats rolled
incl masking and prep $2,657.08 $66.43/ft $221.42/m
propellor prop speed $332.75
shaft prop speed $199.21
misc, Lift Survey (1 hour) $593.31
There were also 4 lay days charged at $200/day = $800 and a wet berth for a day at $90 and a 0.57kg zinc at $51
all up $5673.34 ex GST. $6204.88 incl GST
A good thing was they booked me in within 2-3 weeks, whereas some other big yards were fully booked to March the next year.
My S&S34 was done at Gladesville but that was a few years ago. I found them quite reasonable price wise.
Balmain was an option but more expensive at the time. I often used Woolwich and Cabarita Pt is another option.
Thanks guys. That's a good rough starting point.... Anyone know if it's cheaper outside of Sydney harbour?
Newcastle boat yard charged me $618.20 incl GST in 2023 to lift my boat, clean the hull, and put her back in the water. Rate at the time was $12 per foot ex GST for the lift and $82 per hour ex GST for one hour of hull cleaning.
Also, have you considered joining a club? Sydney Amateurs Sailing Club has a slipway. sasc.com.au/facilities/#Moorings
"The Club offers a slipway and shipwright services at discounted rates to members. We also provide weekend slipping for members who wish to work on their vessels."
Admittedly membership fees ("joining fee: $734.00 (which can be paid in three stages over three years). Annual subscription: $786.00.") would likely offset any initial savings in slipping costs, but if you expect to be based in Sydney and slipping your boat every year or so, being able to do your own work in the slip yard on weekends might be worth it?
Oh, already a member over at Balmain.
Very over doing my own work too - spent enough time looking like a Smurf and figure my time (and back!) is worth a bit more than that.
It's more that I now have a boat much bigger than my last, so it opens up the possibility of going a bit further afield for a better price (and an excuse for a longer sail).
Dear Sir,
I would book a stand at Woolwich Dock jump to Smithfield Altex Factory see David buy Altex 5 plus or vivid petite (add some stuff, please see my posts on fouling paints) and do it yourself. It will last longer and it will cost you half price!

If it's a yard you want and a longer sail, then why not make enquiries of Mid-Coast Boatyard in Newcastle? Door to door its about 70 miles including getting out of Sydney Harbour and into the marina (NCYC) next door to the boat yard. With the right wind, your boat should make Newcastle in daylight hours at the moment, assuming you start at first light and can average 7 knots. Or you could stop over in the Hawkesbury on the way if you want to take your time and make a scenic trip of it.
