There is a variety of paints on the market, all claiming they are great. Does anyone have an opinion on "Northane Products".

$300 / 4litre for northane .... nuts ! I get jotun hardtop for 1/2 that, as the name suggests it's hard it can be mixed to all the colours on the Australian colour chart and more, Northane maybe good but it can't be twice as good

Did you use a roller & brush to apply?
For an under coat did you use Vinyguard Silvergrey 88?
You are right a lot cheaper and my local supplier said the local boat yards are using it.

Vinygard is not recommended for use under hardtop but it does work, vinygard is excellent under water primer tie coat it is a very water proof vinyl coat, & a pain to apply with a brush, rolls okish. If you go with jotun hard top I prime/undercoat with jotamastic. The micro rollers give a good result short nap the foamies tend to leave air bubbles that can be brushed out with thinners, and don't fall for the jota #10 thinners gag, metho works fine, this is an epoxy paint system so ppe is essential especially a gas cartridge in your respirator, I've painted topside without one couldn't remember driving home & found my work boots in the car park next to my thongs where I changed em when I knocked off ! A bit toxic but very good paint

Northane 2 pack is fine, second to Altex Brushing Polyuerethane IMHO, which is Kiwi so must be good.. :)
Roller with Orange foam and keep the brushing thinners up. Make sure you let it kick off properly first, and yes use a mask.

They are expensive (Altex PU was about $100ish for a 1l tin), but its decent stuff and can give you a really good finish with a bit of practice.
I dont go for the 'use home paint, its all the same' but I know some do. Aldi do a paint range too, but I wouldnt paint my boat with that.
The labour is the dear part...

Gee crusty $100/ L it would want to put its self on for that sort of money ! & primer ? It can only be as good as the paint developed for oil rigs in the North Sea. I agree wholeheartedly don't use house paint, you will find yourself gernieing it off, in little plasticity soft flakes, woops don't ask me how I know and if it's in an area of your vessel that drains to the pumps, guess what ..........

yeah It was $88/lt or therabouts. And they only sell it in 1ltrs too, probs because nobody would pay for a 4lt.

Makes you cry when some gets spilled, or when youve mixed it and a shower comes overhead.
. I think 3 tins did my 30ft cat hulls both sides, rudders and transom steps.

Sorry but i'm addicted to it, I tested it the first time on the daggerboards, at home in the garage.
Its pretty thin, but pulls so tight as it dries, and the finish was amazing, comparable to a spray finish.

I like it because it can be wetrubbed and polished, and has held up well in terms of gloss.

Yeah, I used Northane 2 pack, super strong, Ive dragged heavy things across it, and not even a mark.
Application, preparation preparation preparation.. And make sure you have thinners, even in cold weather. I tried without as it was winter. didn't self level or tip off well.too think
if I did again, I'd do more undercoats layersI've got a thread somewhere on here. search it

As I'm currently embarking on another full paint job and due to budget restrictions ( everything goes up except my wages!!) I'm doing the pro trawler trick.

I've heard the Aldi house paint is ok also.

Exterior i''m guessing..
Although you could always go a few ceiling white, and maybe some suede effect on the gunnels.

My fishing vessel was always painted with White Knights oil based paving paint. On Ricochet 2 the deck, cabin and cockpit sides are done in the same paint. The non slip areas of the deck are Kiwi grip over the paving paint. I also use Aldi metal paint in a lot of places.

Appreciate the comments, I a compromise. I'm using a cheap Aldi paint for undercoat and the Bilge than top coating with Norglass Weatherfast Premium.
Its actually difficult too source any cheap paint up here ( Nth NSW ) at the moment due to the floods so while it stretches the budget its my only option to get the job done.
I just keep telling the partner too think how much $$ we are saving in labour
