We are painting the deck and cabin. Well the Missus is doing the actual painting, I'm sort
of.....quality control.
We are using International Perfection.
The undercoat went on real good. Using top brush, no brush marks.
The days were great, no wind and 25 degrees.
She tried an area of topcoat. We followed the rules and finished painting by midday.It looked great, shiny as.
It was certainly touch dry when we left but the overnight dew killed the shine on the flat surfaces.
Vertical surfaces were OK. How do you blokes who have used this paint prevent that from happening.
We are on a swing mooring, and the only thing I can think of, is doing a bit at a time and trying to cover
it with a tarp.

I am not sure if it will help with the dew thing but I thoroughly recommend mixing Penetrol in with your top coat enamel.

It certainly makes paint flow better and maintains the wet edge longer.

Best to only apply 2 pak as the day is warming up, after lunch is a waste of time the dew will get it every time

ps Russel Brown from PT Watercraft has an article on how to get spray paint finish with perfection it costs about $5 but is worth it.

If the paint is going off to fast you can use international brushing retarder
I went to undercoat my cockpit floor today and the hardener had gone off
That's annoying because I had a cunning plan not to open the can but instead punch a couple of holes in the bottom of it. Obviously it didn't work

Thanks guys. We bought the retardant, No9 I think, and that works well.
The hardener of the undercoat had welded itself to the can, from new, and we had to destroy the lid to get it off.
We decanted it into a air proof container.
Missus is managing to mix a small quantity at a time instead of pouring the two cans together, and that's working out OK.
It's giving an excellent finish, BUT, it is hard to use.
I went to Kmart and bought a tarp, 12ft x 10ft. So while the weather is still warm we're going to try top coating a section
at a time and rig the tarp over it. This is just to keep the dew off it.
I'll let you know how we go.

I'm waiting till Spring now Id rather have a couple of warm days are rolling it on. Didn't want that but its getting to cold now down here to paint.
The boat next to me paint a strip on his boat and removed the14 day masking tape along with some paint.
Ive plenty to do else where

you could put it in the boat fridge Andy so it slows it down

Isn't that just like Australia.
You guys are waiting for it to warm up a bit and up here I am waiting for it to cool down a bit so that I don't sweat to death as I re-paint the quarter berths and inside the transom.
It's just coming into the good time of year for cruising so were stocking the boat up and getting the paint and varnish etc ready for some nice quiet days sitting off the anchor and making the boat look a bit more ship-shape.
We will probably sail down to the Keppels and then take a month or two getting back up north.
We won't make the mistake of being in the Whitsundays for the Hamilton Island Race Week this year. It was like bloody Pitt St last year. You actually had to book in to the fuel dock at Able Point just to get a time slot to get fuel.

Your braver than me Sam, I went down the oil base path to paint my boat. Got a thunder storm 3 hours after the finishing coat was applied, all is good. When I was painting it I just kept reminding myself of that myth-busters episode when they polished a turd.

No good for twin pack.

OK so here's what happened... I bought a 10ftx12ft tarp from Kmart. The 12ft length stretched from the furler
to the mast and overhung the lifelines on each side. Missus said to string it up and she would repaint under it,
so she did.
She painted the smooth shiny bits between furler and mast and then we went home leaving the paint nice and shiny.
Next morning we dinghied up to the bow and took a peek under the tarp.....YAHOO....all dry and nice and shiny.
So we moved the tarp to midships and painted that...same result. and yesterday we finished the cockpit.
SO..all you budding Perfection painters, you CAN produce the perfect finish as long as you cover the painted area, and
stick only to the area you've covered.
It's not too much of a hassle rigging the tarp, and it's well worth it to be able to do the job.

yep, being under cover makes a massive difference with condensation at night (i've mostly learnt this from working on outdoor theatre shows)...

Thanks for the info Sam. Its good to know that a deck can be painted whilst the boat is still on the water. I was considering the job and calculating how many weekends it was going to take and how that translated to hardstand time and $$$$.

Now I know I can tackle the job with the boat in the water I know I'll only have to stump up the cost of the paint and consumables.

The weather has just turned in Perth and its been pretty grey and wet for a couple of weeks. Might have to plan the painting for next spring.

Just to qualify what we've done. We have only painted the smooth shiny bits, we now have to paint
the non skid areas. We are going to use Perfection (cream) and Intergrit. The non skid areas are a lot more involved
because you have to have two goes at them, one, the initial coat and Intergrit, two, clean up excess Intergrit and
brush a second coat to seal it.
This too has to covered with a tarp. The dew not only blooms the paint but seems to powder it too. So we are not
taking any chances just because it's a non skid area.
I'll let you know how we go.

I will need to do this in the next couple of years so would be interested to know.

My boats 40 years old and most of the dimpled area has worn smooth. So when we undercoated the
deck and cabin with Perfection undercoat we also did the dimpled areas. Perfection takes a long time to fully cure
( apparently it can be up to a year) so leaving it for a while does no harm. This information is from a
professional boat painter. So the prep is already done and we are starting the job this week.

I should have stated that before undercoating the appropriate areas were thoroughly washed
with sugar soap and rinsed with fresh water (dinghied over in 10ltr barrels).

This is not an easy job. You need patience and you need to stick to the instructions.

Did you you need to sand between the prime and top coats? Do you have any feel for the amount of time you and the missus have spent on the project?

That looks so good Sam. I'm planning on doing my boat in a couple of months, I hope it turns out that good, Are there any brush strokes that we cant see in pics? Thats what im worried about when I do my boat.
