Hi All
On my cat I have a 9.9 hp 4stroke , when cold engine starts ok , but once warmed up if I turn engine off and try to restart the starter seems to disengage before starting the engine , can be a little unnerving in certain situations . I have checked all usual suspects ( battery , connections etc) Any idea what signals the starter to disengage ?

perhaps a ring gear may have lost a tooth or see how the start solenoid is working
Maybe lube the Bendix drive on the starter motor
and test your starting circuit from the ignition key back to the solenoid
I'm assuming its remote starting

I have 9.9 4 stroke,Yamaha remote control, key start only. It might be similar or identical of yours.
Not clear what ..disengage exactly means .
My understanding is ...not enoug power ...to engage and spin the engine.
Higher resistance along eather power line + 12 volts or control line.
Most likely power line and inspection is not a cure, before goes any deeper
you must disconnect power lines on all points ...starter , selenoid, battery and thoroughly cleaned,
a smidget of conductive grease would help, but that's for long run.

I never run out a fuel before storage, 2 year later , I could not accelerate , cure is simple but elaborate .
Main jet build up jet is in the middle of carby.

Hi thanks for your replies this has really got me stumped , the engine although about 6 yrs old has only done about 25 hrs .
When engine is cold the starter works fine , when warm the starter kicks in ok but immediately throws itself out before the engine has a chance to start . I have read that some starters disengage with oil pressure but not sure if this is the case here (because 4 strokes are so quiet people couldn't hear if the engine started and they screwed the starter /ring gear so they changed the design and used oil pressure to disengage the starter) maybe the solenoid is connected to the oil pressure switch?

Can you start the motor manually.? If so does it start easy?.
If your motor is trying to start it maybe throwing out the starter but unable to continue to idle
I had a problem with my Honda that it would half heartily try to start when warm and I solved it by increasing the throttle range in the neutral lock out. Doing this meant I could open the throttle a little more in neutral when starting.

Engine is in a pod makes it difficult to manual start. Thanks anyway, will go down to boat later this week and have a play

You could also pull the spark plug cap off or crank with the kill switch on to see if the starter cranks solidly when the motor is warm. Doing that may eliminate or confirm starter motor issues with out interference from the Honda motor

Fingers crossed I think problem solved ,went through same procedure yesterday cold engine started fine , let warm up turned engine off ,waited about 15 secs engine restarted no problem . repeated a few times no probs .
Waiting the 15 SECS IS IMPORTANT to let the oil pressure fall . Solenoid must be connected to oil pressure sender .

I checked the manual, that is all of the wiring diagram, there is no more of the circuit.
There are 3 or 4 more of the same, just to suit different models, the 8hp, 15 etc..
You can let me know which one and I can send to you.

I had heard that a dirty oil filter can cut the engine revs , but think it was on much bigger motors .

What I am misding is ...remote start, starter motor, charging control act.
as you mention it's not there, then ..just a missing link to get a full picture

- my factory worker logic would suggest- if oil pressure is too high / for any reason .blockage etc/
the engine would not start. !
