i've sailed into Sydney about a week before Christmas when my 15 hp outboard decided to pack it in.
No luck finding a repair shop in close vicinity willing to undertake the work at that time of year.
A week into the new year I continued my search, with various knockback with. reasons given as too small a motor waste of time. Sorry we don't work on that make of motor. i'll get back to you next week but don't return my calls or messages. Now here's the crunch. I've diagnosed the problem to be electrical.and oh yes heaven forbid it's Chinese. A Maxus 15 hp pull start long shaft 2 stroke.bought new 2015 with no problems. During the ownership some service outlets would service it and some would not with the reason that we don't work on those brands.
The majority of sales outlets can only service but not repair. If you a genuine mechanic you'll work on any motor and name your fee right. I'm at Blackwattle Bay. motor is off the boat and at a friends place in Glebe. IS THERE ANYONE WHO KNOWS of someone who is an outboard mechanic in close proximity, time is running out and I need to sail south.Thanks

Checked spark?
If no spark multi meter test cdi unit. Should be cheap to buy cdi for that outboard. For $130 moby marine will diagnose fault. I too have had no boat over Xmas due to electrical fault. Cdi unit coming today .

WRT testing the cdi unit. What exactly do you measure?

Apparently Maxus has gone bankrupt in the time since, and my warranty on my cheap motor is useless too. The good news is that the motors were reputed to be a clone of Yamaha motors, so parts should be able to be substituted.
I'm not local to help with finding a mechanic. Sorry. But the thing is a simple, 2 stroke motor, with simple electrics familiar to all outboards, lawnmowers, etc. The magnet/magneto thing should still have magnetism, so the rest is wiring, and the capacitor or CDI thing mentioned above. There are books in the library about 2 stroke motors.

I have an Evenrude 15 on my tender/workboat and I use this blokes manuals for maintenance. He also covers other motors and his analysis of engine faults may be of assistance.

That's right Phil Maxus is a Yamaha clone. I had a small four stroke version that kept shredding the impeller vanes and
had a flaw in the carby float. Eventually they gave me my money back. The engine was rubbish.

I just spent the day stripping my Honda 2.3
down to fix the centrifugal clutch ( it did go swimming a few months back) great motor unless you have to pull it apart !!! Wasn't expecting to take the whole thing apart just to remove the bottom cowling !! Topped it off by a snapped screw on the leg , I have a older 2 available for spares does anyone know if they are the same ? I'll find out soon enough.. if not any ideas to get a seized snapped bolt out ? Maybe a easy out but the diameter of the bolt is not large.

Slowly and carefully if it is a hard bolt shaft in alloy.
I imagine the bolt snapped because it is seized in.
In that case an easyout will not remove it.

1. Sharpen your drill bits or buy new ones.
2. If possible use a fixed drill press.
3. Centrepunch and drill 1 or 1.5 mm
4.. Drill 2 or 2,5mm
5. Drill 3 or 3,5 mm
6. Continue slowly and carefully until there is only the thread left.
7. Tap out the remaining thread.

There is no shortcut

Hi Jayde, I'd bet money that the 2.3 & the 2hp are identical except for the bore and piston.
have been wondering about accessing the clutch, sounds a bit painful. I've got a 2001 2hp and I'm certain if I had to pull it apart to get at the clutch I'd end up snapping a few bolts off.
The only issue I've had so far is oil for the crank case beather oiling up the carby, but is easy to rearrange things to get around that one.
good luck with the broken bolt sometimes heating it up then dowsing with water helps
