Been to the boat show and decided to pull the trigger on a shiny new Axiom MFD as the old C120 is out of date, its just being used as a Radar/AIS screen now.

Got to decide on the charts to go in the new Axiom, any opinions or experience on the three choices above. I am familiar with Navionics but not the other two.

ps. any one after a radar set up, will be selling the current one cheap

I don't think so, I have them on Open CPN I think, there is entire section of SEQ between Russell Isl and Runaway Bay that is just blank, Its a tricky area for yachts as well.

The advice from O-charts was buy a Brownies beacon to beacon

The Clarence river is also only covered by official charts as far upstream as the Harwood bridge, I assume the area you're referring to is also beyond the reach of commercial shipping. I imagine / hope that with the increased ability of digital mapping lesser channels will be charted

Yes, that was the reason O-charts gave for the missing navigational information, that area would have to be one of the busiest areas in the country for recreational boating.

There is no admiralty chart for that area

Its very poor that the Australian Hydrographic Office have zero interest in that area, as I mentioned it is a very busy waterway that is in the middle of Gold Coast, probably the largest regional city in the country.

Anyway lucky for brownies beacon to beacon and also Navionics, which is what I have opted for on the Axiom.

Just put O-Charts on my new OpenCPN/Openplotter setup, I'm disappointed to find the lack of detail around Jumpinpin as it is where I do 90% of my sailing. I have made some raster charts for the area using Sat2Chart. better than nothing.

I have some great sailing out of HS every week or so . What I did years ago and still refer to for around that area from time to time was to print-off the relevant pages of Beacon to Beacon ,buy a $25 laminator and laminate them to have in the cockpit. The laminator has come in handy for other stuff to leave on board as well.

I have got to learn how to do that.

I have used C-map charts on the iPad via the app as well at the navionics app. I prefer the look of the c-map charts and the information they display (like light characteristics). But the community edits on navionics are great, like people's feedback about anchorages, and these carry accross to the charplotter with your free one year subscription with the SD card when you buy it.

I got steered towards the navionics charts, probably because the retailer isn't a B&G dealer. The C-Map looked nice, I had a good look at the B&G screens as well at the show. Hard to split the difference, I like that you could add a forward facing sonar with the B&G Zues that you can't with the Axiom. I ended sticking with Raymarine because it works with all the equipment in the boat already so I don't have to upgrade the entire system at once. The only functionality I wont have is using the Chartplotter to control the auto pilot, I think that is probably a good thing. I don't want the chart plotter having a brain fart or a guest on board deciding to push buttons and gybe the boat by surprise.

I think its good to go with the same brand especially if your wind and depth is also Raymarine. I've previously had trouble getting all the data that is available on Raymarine Seatalkng to B&G equipment.
