In Japan I have been using CMaps for the last 5 years.
It was on a tablet which has died.
In the CMaps program I had saved some tracks which allowed me to get into some tricky places. Gone.
I am looking at getting a Navionics SD chart of Japan's charts.
I have another new tablet which does not have an SD card slot.
What I want to know is, Can I plug the Navionics SD card into a card reader and move it from device to device?

Seeing no one else has had a crack at answering yet...

I don't know anything about cmaps or navionics data specifically but as a data analyst I can tell you that data files for any application will be stored in a specific format which could range from something as accessible as plain text to some closed access proprietary format.

The file is just a file so moving the data around is simple. It's whether the target application can read the format of the source data. Check the tech specs of Cmaps to see what formats the data can be exported as and check navionics to see what data formats it can import. Hopefully one format is shared across both.

No need for the sd card, just download the Navi app to your new device, unless you have a treasure map on an existing sd then i fear you will have to buy a compatible plotter. I have an old gen 2 iPad that I loaded the navionics app onto years ago, I have neglected to take up any updates so years later I'm still running old charts, for my purpose all good. For a back up sounder I purchased the sonar phone transducer/ wireless sender with the beauty of being able to make detailed charts of smugglers coves / gunk holes. If I was venturing further afield in oz waters I would be going straight and getting a subscription for the AHOs electronic charts, but for now X marks the spot

Re RobWed. Thanks Rob. I am not trying to transfer any data from one system to another (CMap to Navionics).
My CMap tablet and therefore app is dead so all of the data (tracks especially) is lost.

Re Ramona. Yeah. What are the odds of Navionics making it easy for the user to have some flexibility?

Re: Thanks Woko. I know the easy way out is to just buy the CMap or Navionics charts and that is what I will do, but I just had a simple question and was frustrated that Navionics didn't bother to get back to me.

On another note. I will be doing a 200 mile trip up the coast of North Japan in August. Old friend coming out from Oz to join me.
Day hops of 50 miles or so up and non-stop back down. Will be laying a track during the day that I can follow at night will keep me clear of the fish farms, traps and pots.

I have changed cards between plotters without a problem. Lent cards to people as well. Not sure about PC's.
I think somewhere in the settings is an option to save tracks to card.
No expert so not 100% sure.

When you say other devices, are you thinking PC or plotter or another tablet?

Exactly the info that I needed.
I will use a tablet and if it the dies (hits the deck like the last one) I will just unplug the SD , buy a new tablet and insert.

Might try a monitor and small computer eventually, but with a small boat that could be overkill.

I am not guaranteeing it will work. As a friend of mine that is a good electronics guy says"it should work".
Really look into saving the tracks and do a few tests. Each device is different.
The tracks are not automatically saved to the SD card as far as I understand.

The tracks would be in the memory. It's unlikely a manufacturer would allow over writing of their SD card.

Gary, are you thinking by using an SD card the tracks will be saved to it? I am not sure this is the case. You will still need to save tracks to the tablet or a PC. I have never had to do this as have always had a plotter.

Now I know why Navionics is not used in Japan even thought they sell the charts.
Navionics does not ship to japan. Took them 2 days to get back to me with that. Crazy!
