Hello all. Ive Moved to NZ but my boat is in Jervis Bay Still and i am trying to figure out the best way over.
I have no issue sailing her over. My boat needs to be registered somewhere and i can get NZ Registration.
Question is, is the Australian Registration a one off payment?
It seems the NZ registration is 1175 per annum. Im not planning on sailing overseas again. I just want my boat here. Its heaven here for sailing. boats are relatively cheap here but im quite attached to mine.

Do you realise on arrival to NZ there is a 15% GST to pay, plus a 5% duty (if applicable) on the market value of the yacht, plus clearance fees etc

It means that NZ boat purchases can be cheaper than that bringing your boat across.

Been on the phone with customs and nz maritime. Only gst for me and it's a 5k boat so should be right. Up in norhtland. Fishing off mangonui wharf right now. Paradise up here and land a plenty to buy. So much coastline.

Hopefully the "rules" are the same now I exported a boat from Aust to PNG in 2011.

You did not have to have Aust rego to export the boat if there is no intention to bring it back to Aust but you need the customs clearance for the boat and your passport, they will inspect the boat, bills of sale etc there is a charge for it, (what it is now?).

You need to contact Aust customs/immig. what they want now....but i do know if you don't clear immigration when leaving, you will have a very long delay at the airport if you return to Aust.

One other thing I believe NZ does not require boat registration for pleasure craft, registration is required only if you take the boat OS.

Good question jdol....If a boat is purchased overseas with the intention of sailing it to your home
port in Oz can you pre register it in the country of sale.

According to nz customs the boat has to be registered somewhere to leave australia. I can nz register my boat according to nz customs and maritime. Im happy hear this as when Kia Kaha is in NZ she will not be returning to Australia so it seems pointless to have aussie rego when all i want to do is clear aussie customs. The Nz rego lasts 5 years, then no need to renew and theres no regos in nz for boats atm. Also here up north moorings work differently. You actually pay for the seabed and you kind of own it. You dont not rent it from the Queen like in Australia

Yes, you can. If you pay the applicable taxes and fees, you can register it then cruise it home.

If you're not returning, then I don't see the point in Aust registration either.

If the boat has another nation's flag at the time of departure, then I don't see any problems with obtaining clearance.
