hi all

A mate of mine is looking at buying a Mumm/Farr 30

Just wondering if any of the forum members have any experience on them and any thoughts would be appreciated

Pros
Fantastic design, punches well above its weight performance wise (for far fewer $$than larger designs).
Very well thought out deck layout, all systems work.
Versatile - I think it can be brought up to Cat 1 (if you're really keen).
Relatively easy to handle, no runners.
Cons
Does rely on crew weight (as with many race designs) to a large extent for righting moment.
Lack of headroom.

Another point is they don't (generally) have a prodder, so needs a bit more coordination to fly a kite, but can still fly assys (from the pole - and the system works easily), and are a weapon downwind!
Also, to get the most out of them, they need to be well and constantly (again, true of most racing designs).

As with any boat, the $$s will add up very quickly (especially as a % of purchase price) when significant equipment needs replacing.

That a great summation All@Sea.
Don, a friend has just cut the cabin off a Mumm 30 and did some really cool mods, awesome little boat, it only needs a breath of air to move it. It would be soo good in a breeze with a packed rail. The crew weight and position looked to be critical as All mentioned, and I was surprised at how little room inside (especially without a cabintop!).
The running rigging is tiny, I'd actually enjoy the trips to Whitworths for a change

Just realised I missed a word.

Got two here in Perth, Problem Child & Cougar. Both good boats, perform very well in the light to moderate conditions. They rate well on IRC.

Hi Lydia

I think he is trying to get it as well

I noticed the Defiance is in the Kermandie

Is there any chance we can twist your arm into twilighting her next season and if so where would she start in the fleet the fleet if Mick was the fastest boat in the fleet and he had 60 minutes sailing time

Sydney to Kermandie in July in a Mumm 30
That is not something you see everyday.

I did an ask around my Sydney mates as I'm doing to setup down here when she arrives.
They just knew she was a good solid boat and a faster mumm:)

Hi Rumblefish

I gave him some advice as well (although he didn't ask for mine) and that was to buy something with windows and a comfy cabin, a normal size mast and and a massive keel like the rest of us race but he didn't listen to me

I look forward to the first race when blows a bit so we can get some updated photo's to stir him up with

Regards Don

Harsh

Not me

I try not to stress him out too much

I assume that Mick will be on the main as that is what he does on AGAP and he needs to loose a bit of weight so it might be good for him

Scott had a Mumm called Cleopatra down here a few years ago when we first arrived and it used to do pretty well against Red Jacket, Redback and Bellandean that were sailing here at the time and then it went to Hobart and did pretty well up there

How do you think the Mumm will compare to the Elliott on the water
