Hi Guys
I removed my throttle / gear change assembly to fresh it and replace the ply backing which is stuffed.
Once I got it off I noticed the lever is cracked across the bottom of the lever where the splined boss is and locating grub screw
Its similar to this image



I am searching for a replacement lever any links?? would be appreciated

I had one the same. It fell apart, firstly the handle broke off, so I bought a new handle, then the whole lot just fell apart through corrosion.
I fitted a new plastic one. It works fine but I should have tested my cables as the gear one was seized solid and preventing the gearbox from engaging properly.

Do the original cables fit Morning bird? If they do Id say not much more money you have a new assembly

I am not sure how the lever achieves this but whilst not recommended for normal operations, there are times when you may need to go from forward to reverse or vice versa immediately, to prevent hitting a wharf or another boat. If that seems far fetched try manouevering into a tight pen down a narrow lane with boats and bowsprits sticking out in a strong wind not always blowing the desired direction. According to the "features" this lever would leave you at best red faced and possibly out of pocket. Not to mention the heart palpitations.

don't know if the Bukh will allow you go forward and reverse that quick with the big flywheel, so this lever might work well.

The technique worked fine with the bukh in a Lyons 54 including getting into a pen at night in a fast flowing the Brisbane River.

I have this one that suits the era of the boat but seem to be a magnet for starboard headsail sheet

I am seriously considering putting some sort of cover over it when sailing because the sheet always seems to be wrapped around it when I go about

Mines a pain also Donk I have been thinking I could fit a flush cover in the hole and move the engine control and maybe fit oil and temp gages there


The previous owner fitted this box which houses a set of external start stop and engine warning lights to me its ugly.
some how I will tidy it up

^^^ That looks good. Is it all stainless??? The alloy handles always corrode away on those other ones.

The throttle lever position is a constant problem on Second Wind. It gets bumped just about every time somebody changes position in the cockpit.

Another mod job for "the list".

I think that the vetus stainless one looks a lot nicer than the grey plastic on that was shown in a previous post

Thanks donk found a vetus @marine direct canceled a plastic one I had ordered

My new one is the same as HG02 photo above. Cable fitted straight on, very little adjustment needed if the old cable hadn't been seized.
The mechanism does not prevent you trashing the gearbox by changing rapidly from forward to reverse, but it does ensure gear is changed before throttle comes on. Very fast changes just won't give time for the revs to drop to an acceptable level before the new gear engages. Only for emergency situations. Havefun's example on the Lyons 54, having driven both boats my new throttle is far far better than the one on the Lyons.
The one Don shows will trap/wrap ropes if it is in the way of sheets etc. it will also corrode.

This is the one I have ordered its Vetus part number is Sisco so it must be s good one
and I have a nice piece of teak to mount it on to fill the hole in the cockpit side

Dont you have paddle gear shift on your walker tiller yet Donk ??? you must have missed the update . Oh thats right you have a jap engine

Not a big fan of the paddle shifters on the later Ferrari's compared to the earlier gated floor shift as shown in the photo I posted

At the moment Donk I only look to see where the winds coming from to have a pee over the side I have the Nude version of a Walker H28

Yes I will Led Nav lights with anchor light included and wind as well Donk. Not to sure which yet Ill start browsing soon though will replace the aging VHF aerial and cable

Ordered yesterday morning arrived @work mid day $20 freight

Nicely packed and appears to be a good product Ill fit it this weekend . I think what Donk said about placement I will fit this unit on the port side about half way up length of the tiller so it clear of where Id sit and not in the way of the tiller as it is now from the old unit. I think Ill move the gages from where they are and fit them in a water proof box and fit this where the original engine control was removing the problem of a hole to fill . If I do this I will also move my solar controlled and bilge pump switch to the starboard side. to fill the hole where the engine panel is now .

Does it look as good in the flesh as it does in the advert and what does the build quality look like

Also is that a template to cut a fair sized square mounting hole in the side of the cockpit ?

Looking at the installation instructions on the web site I thought that the mounting plate might separate from the rear mechanism and it might have just needed a hole for the shaft to pass through and some smaller holes for the 4 mounting bolts to go through

There is a push button on the boss of the handle depress that and it only operates the throttle not the gearbox release the button and it goes back to push forward it selects forward and push the throttle down further and it increase the RPM same in reverse
My old one was a pain it had a pull button to release the gearbox and it would get in the way of the throttle lever
The Vetus unit will accept a variety of cables Morse 33C type Os and Km

A while back I was chasing a replacement Morse Control (2 handle) for my Yanmar and ended up getting it from www.discountmarinesupplies.com/index.html (overseas). It turned up with no problems. I couldn't find an Australian Supplier on the web. But later on I decided to replace the gear control cable and Graham from Sunsport Marine (chandler) at Mooloolabar had no trouble sourcing the cable. So I would imagine he could have also got the control handles for me if I had of asked. I would also image you would get the same service from one of your local chandlers. But in saying that, Graham at Sunsport is worth his weigh in gold with the knowledge he has and the service he provides. (my opinion anyway)

I will still source a handle for the old unit as some stage as the rest of it is still quiet usable. For me from the begining I have given myself three years to refurbish this boat before I retire and as the boat will be passed on to my two boys I do not mind spending a little more on the boat than it probably deserves and knowing this I will never get the money I spend on it back ever.
As I said I have around three years before I retire and when I'm done at that time all I ever would like to do to this boat is yearly maintenance from then on so . Perhaps the original throttle after beening stripped down and cleaning and repacking with grease might do the next 15 to 20 years if I live that long or it might need replacing Id rather replace it now and know that this part of the boat is working well and can be trusted completely to do its job for the next 20 year.
There are other reasons also for replacing it the alloy handle even when replaced will eventual corrode like the last one by that time I wioll be well in to my 70s I do not want to be chasing around looking for a handle or having to replace the assembly like Iv just done .
Life is all about choices and this is my choice each to there own I say
