Hi all my boat is now on a swing mooring and l am wondering what people do for locks. My boat has a lock in the top companionway washboard.

Do people go for a fortress approach or do real thieves just break in anyway?

Or are we just trying to keep kids out?

Serious crooks will get in no matter what. I just use a waterproof padlock on a homemade SS clasp that looks impenetrable. Obviously anyone with some basic knowledge would find a way in but the average no-hoper would be put off. It's been a long time since we have had a break in locally and that one seemed to be a targeted attack.

No easy answer unfortunately. A boating friend had more dollar damage done to the boat by thieves breaking in than what was stolen.

I guess it depends on whether your boat looks attractive to thieves or not. With the current state of my boat they probably wouldn't bother.

I just use a normal 50mm padlock (shaft maybe 8mm thick) on the hatch. The outboard has a similar set-up plus extra panels surrounding it it in its hatch.
Provided there is not much valuable electronics left on board and it is insured, it seems to get more attention from birdlife than from people, or there are far easier targets nearby.

You could try one of these www.trektransponder.com.au If you get an alarm you check with camera to see what it is (ie not a bird or a mate who is allowed to be there), if its a real crim send a command to turn on siren.
