In regards to living on a boat permanantly, where can you do this in Australia apart from a marina. You are not allowed on a swing mooring, so is anchoring somewhere the only solution?

I know of a couple of long-term live-aboards on swing moorings in Port Philip, despite Parks Victoria's prohibition. They keep a low profile.

There are liveaboards here too and the secret as Graeme mentions is to keep a low profile. If your mooring is not in front of some pensioners waterfront house you will be fine. Just don't have your washing on the guardrails! Several places in Sydney have liveaboards. I was surprised at the number in Kogarah Bay.

Quite a few (a Lot) of liveaboards in Sydney and Pittwater on swing moorings. Keep a low profile and keep your boat from being an eyesore.

I live on mine about 80% of the time on a commercial swing mooring in NSW. Never had a drama but really you'd never know anyone was there except for the small rowing dinghy behind her. Boat kept in great condition, nothing hanging where it's seen and help keep the place clean and keep an eye on things happening around me too. I work sun up to sun down most days so very under the radar.

Lots of people living on board in Qld, Brisbane River places ( close to shops and ferry ), Gold coast, Jacobs Well.
July don't do wild parties, hang your undies for everyone to see.
I live on my boat for last 5 years giving up on marina living.
Self sufficient with power, water, fuel. Don't think i change for shore living.
Discovered food supply places, antifouling places, laundry places.
Currently in Gold coast.
But looks like councils start developing some places and possibly need to find new swing mooring.
Living style not for everyone but it's unique and some a jealous because you can have million dollar view for free.
You need pay attention to weather a lot, anchor ground ( might drag in high winds ) and some morons who anchor next to you and go away for days disregard weather.

there are literally hundreds if not thousands of people living full time on their boats around the australian coast all the time. we are one and we have many friends doing the same thing

but it's important to understand there are two kinds of live-aboard folk. one is permanently cruising...moving frequently...usually north for winter & south for summer. thus is our life style and we never have any problems from officaldom because of it

the other is folk who use their boat as a floating house...stay in one spot & never go anywhere. they usually have a job, car etc. they can have issues...especially if the boat looks uncared for and they create problems for their neighbours.

if you want to be stationary, then it is possible to get your own mooring, but as others have said : keep a low profile

Pretty sure your allowed to live on your boat in queensland. Correct me if im wrong though.
