stone, the book I referred to is Called "Coastal Navigation" by Jeff Toghill. which is a bit simpler & basic than than your book, but a bit more up-to-date.
To the OP don't get distracted by complicated celestial nav' the old salts are talking of, learn the basics first. A chart, compass, pencil, note pad, bi-rola chart protractor, basic knowledge & a cheap $100 GPS is all you need to nav anywhere in Aus' waters. cheers
