I have had my Jarkan 39 for sale for a couple of months now and have had some interest but no hard offers.
It was built as a short handed race boat "Toccatta"
by Kanga for himself to race in the Melbourne to Osaka and he mentions the yacht on his website saying the design was years ahead of its time and influenced many of his future boat designs.
It is very stiff and does not need a crew on the rail and as such has been a great fast cruising boat and we have sailed it many times with just my wife, and kids up and down the east coast.
It is extremely well built as most Jarkans are but has a basic fit tout, Galley, nav table, settee berths, enclosed head, V berth double berth down the back. But all fairly open layout which we have found keeps the boat really airy and fresh downstairs.
It has a really full inventory of sails several mains, brand new carbon main and mylar taffeta cruising main, lots of headsails, roller curler and spare racing headstay with foil .
Motor is a Volvo 30 done about 120 hours since a full rebuild driving 3 bladed feathering prop. Auto helm 4500, st60 / 50 instruments.
Rig is alloy double spreader fractional, I don't use runners in harbour or day sailing but put them back on for cruising off shore on long passages which is and easy 10 minute job.
The boat would suit a couple of sailors who want to cover distance in a really sound boat.
I love the boat and it has been a great family yacht introducing my kids to sailing and giving us some great memories. So much so that basically we spend more time motoring the boat around watching the kids racing their yachts than using the boat as it should be.
Currently on market at $59,000 which i have reduced over the summer to get some interest.
It is not some old IOR sh@#ter
So my question is what is a yacht like this worth?
I am throwing the question open to the learned forum members, Is it the money or have the right people not come along yet ?

Like anything else in this world it's worth what a genuine buyer is prepared to pay for it, not what the tyre and fender kickers throw at you.

According to Cisco's last word where he commented on the value of a boat for sale, he reckoned slightly less than what was being asked.

l am not going to play with your dollars giving irresponsible figures without inside knowledge, rather give you insite of one boat buyer's thoughts within his financial limits.
A boat buyer with a budget! Controversy in terms?

Our yachts worth as much as we could sell them today for c a s h money. No bones about it.

I was looking for two years before l bought mine - seeing all the mooring minders, failed dreams, abandoned projects and some beauties out of my reach financially - between Adelaide and Brisbane.
I was n o t rushing things. When l found the one l eventually bought, l was still not jumping for it - thou l fell in love with it, the second one in two years - l kept a reasonably cool head after showing some interest. The asking price was way out of my budget. I was buying my time finding out about the owners circumstances. I was gambling. It took me four months to make an offer which was close to half what they asked for. The dealer called my offer insulting and laughed at me. In a day l had the answer, l succeeded, and ever since l regret that l was not tougher on them.
After all that l was still ready to walk away - despite spending money on insurance survey - if he did not comply with my very reasonable demands to make some repairs to make the yacht sea-worthy. He grudgingly complied and l paid.
After all that, l learned what BOAT stands for. Hahaha...

Nice advertorial I,m sure that falls within the rules of seabreeze ...........to answer your question , any fixed keel yacht no matter how good, is only worth what someone is prepared to to pay you for it . [ sorry, but i had to say it ]

there are so many yachts for sale in that size range

its a bit like once you buy a yacht and own it for a few years , she is yours to look after until you can find another sponser to take over . Some never do , they are sitting in marina berths and moorings rotting away all over the world .

I did a lot of racing on a Jarkan 38 back in the '90s, couple of Hobarts, Southports, Coffs, Hammo, etc, + deliveries between.
The boats were bullet proof, yours is only 3yrs older so I'm guessing that the build quality is very similar, even though the designs are different.
Just had a look at your ad on Yachthub, and compared to similar sized/priced boats, yours seems like great value, BUT IT IS A BUYERS MARKET...
Problem is, as most people here know, its not the price of the boat, its the cost of owning a boat that really sucks...
Having said that, dont give your boat away.

$60,000 for that stamp of a yacht seems like good buying to me if I wanted a go fast yacht to do some long distance cruising in, subject to inspection/survey/Mary from the Diary's approval and whatever else.

It seems to be very much a buyer's market still and insurance requirements and storage costs are baulking people off yacht ownership as well.

You are in NSW and I presume in either Botany Bay, Port Jackson, Pittwater or Lake Macquarie, by the looks of your photo, where there is huge competition to sell a yacht.

I am in Bundaberg and I fairly much knew I was not going to find the yacht I wanted in Queensland. The yacht I really wanted was at Lake Macquarie and two great mates on Seabreeze helped my bring her to Bundy.

The right buyer has not come along yet. Might I suggest you put your price up by $1,000 to $60,000 instead of $59,000. Biggest mistake the Australian Mint ever made was not making a 99 cent coin.

Except at the supermarkets, I have never come across a price that was not negotiable. Of course when someone wants to negotiate a price down, they have to give you something in return such as an unconditional contract or quick settlement or something else that sweetens the deal.

You could sweeten the deal by offering assisted delivery to anywhere east coast of Australia. That can be a big plus to some buyers but you would need to assess the buyer as to whether you are prepared to put to sea with him/her.

She is a great stamp of a yacht so don't give her away but if she is costing more than it is worth to hang on to it, then you are behind the .

Lovely boat and well priced. It's probably the sort of boat I would buy if I was interested in a large yacht. Good deck gear and basic practical interior. The cockpit does not look comfortable though and probably best for a solo sailor and windvane set up. Its a very much a sit on versus sit in cockpit.

The problem is the yacht market for harbour cruisers and coastal hoppers over 36 foot is probably the largest segment at the moment and lots of these buyers wont recognize an ocean going vessel. The great expanses of polished timbers and cushions are to appeal to the woman and lounging about in marinas. Sit tight and wait for that one buyer that recognizes what she is, a fast passage maker from an excellent designer built by a very practical shipwright.

I worked for John King as a yacht designer in the period when your boat was designed and I woul definitely buy yours it is in good shape and I have memories of working on the drawings for Jarkan. It is a bargain at $59 K.

Thanks for the positive feed back guys, Yes I agree I reckon the boat is cheap at $60K. This is the second time I have owned this boat that is how much I like it.
I am 6'2" and it has full head room down stairs which has always been an attraction.
I like John Kings designs and would love a line drawing of this yacht, and Kanga builds a hell of a good sea boat.
As far as assisting with delivery that would honestly be a pleasure for me to show an owner around the boat and then get it sailing on a long trip.
I also know that I will regret selling the boat and will probably look to buy it back again when kids have gone. I waited 14 years between owning the boat previously, so whats another 5 years.
The boat does not cost a lot to keep and I guess that is why I won't just give it away.
Any way I think I am around the money I just need the right person to front up
This is not a boat for those who just want a mass produced yacht this is a boat to finish off to your own specs and go sailing.

Ah! There in your words lies the problem with the dollars. "this is a boat to finish off to your own specs" . Jarkans are great boats and I am envious owners of good 10.5s. When I was purchasing my boat 8 or 9 years ago now, one piece of advice that has proven the test of time was to make sure the boat had that WOW factor if I wanted to the family to be interested in sailing with me. My daughter was the tester I used. It had to pass her approval. You are right when you point out the difference between a good sea boat and a harbour day boat. And I also think there is a difference between a boat that has been professionally fitted out inside and a boat that has been basically fitted out by the owner after purchasing the hull. Read Morningbird's posts about the various S&S34s he has seen. Alas to have enough money in the budget to "finish off" invariably implies less money to buy and also implies that the boat might not present with the WOW factor. All that means that of the genuine buyers currently in the market looking for boats, only a smaller particular proportion will see the potential and value in the Jarkan 39. Good luck.

Some buyers buy a boat from overseas designers and other enlightened buyers buy Australian Designs which are very good as well, that's a personal view the Jarkan is an excellent yacht. And I have some drawings in my files of the 39 I will check later this month.
