I'm searching and learning. Is it true you cannot take your boat out of water for a service if the rigging is bejond 10yo? Just asking. How is that restriction if true plausable?

Hmm insurance, the short answer is very few places will haul you out without 3rd party & public liability, on the other hand insurance companies won't insure your rig if it's more than 10yr old, that's because stainless steel work hardens and becomes brittle, but the rule applies to gal or dynema, it's a load of BS but that's the way it is. So if you want comprehensive insurance you need less than 10 yr old standing rigging. Otherwise 3rd party will get you hauled out

recently had mine slipped and antifouled , none of the prospective places asked about insurance.

You're buying a boat.

Hidden expenses will abound!

There is no 'ready to go' boat, even a new one.

New Wave marine insurance will give you comprehensive without asking questions about the rig.

I guess if you make a claim due to the mast coming down they'll ask for receipts/report what have you and if its more than the magic arbitrary 10 years they won't pay.

Hey its New Wave Marine, they probably wont pay anyway but least you'll be able to keep your boat in a marina.

I don't want to touch a marina unless I must do so. woko explained it well. I was concerned about getting it out for repair. Third party, no worries, thanks mate. The cost of owning something I can handle, but I will put Myself in the position to walk on. I would require the boat I purchase to have had the rigging done, documented in the last 3 years. Plus pulled out of the water, and all issues seen to.. I'm not about to pay a heap of cash for a vessel that requires this done. I will pay for something that I can step aboard with this complete, onboard Issues I can deal with. Otherwise the value will go strait down $8000, maybe $15000 A lot of junk out there waiting for a sucker. I know what I want, and will pay for it. When I purchase it will have a current survey, and I will probably get My own beyond that independently.

Woko didn't mention New Wave. He stated that you couldn't get comp insurance with an older than 10 year rig. Which is right for the vast majority of insurers. The exception is New Wave which I also stated is probably rubbish insurance.

I'll leave you to it. I'm sure you've got it all worked out.

He said you can aquire third party to get hauled out. That was what I wanted to know. But still a lot of junk out there.

I don't understand what you said. If you mean there are a stack of boats on moorings that hang I agree. Those are the boats to avoid. I'm certain that without love and care those are to be avoided, the same as morterhouse skipper, more of them than spare tyres.

For what it's worth, you can have comprehensive insurance with out covering the standing rig, so if some clown slams into you & smacks a great hole in ya topside insurance will cover it & do there damnedist to get it out of said clown. On the other hand if your standing rig fails and punches a hole in your boat, well I think it's obvious your screwed ! I've got 3rd party on two boats, It would be interesting to see what would occur if I ran into myself and made a claim ? Anyone care to hazard a guess

I haven't made a claim and obviously hope not to.

At the price (around $900 from memory) I consider it a license for marina entry more than substantial insurance. They may well be okay, in which case they are good value I guess.

I always feel you do only get what you pay for though.

I haven't heard any bad stories so they may well be ok when claim time comes.

I joined here to find out about insurance, so not knowing how old my rigging is I went for New Wave,
They just got back to me saying I need on out of water survey and the cost will be $1750 with an excess of $1250.

Looks like I will have to get third party....if I can find a policy anywhere.

Mmm. Well that's a change of terms from my experience.

Just received ins. renewal yesterday from New Wave. Its increased 45% on last year.
Perhaps a new underwriter?

Not sure where you're located but from personal experience Woolwich will haul you out (and u can work on the boat yourself) if you don't have new rigging or even current insurance.
