Has anyone had any luck getting insurance for a yacht 20+ years old, kept on a mooring. The boat is on Lake Macquarie.

I'm with NRMA . Botany bay ,swing mooring

A few years ago I had a 1980's Swanson on a mooring in the Illawara with fully comprehensive NRMA insurance. Not sure if they still provide that level of cover but worth a call. I thiink it would depend on the value.

Club Marine, Parramatta River.

I just moved to Lake Macquarie and am with Club Marine on a swing mooring. You may require a survey. The have an additional premium for swing moorings of about $40.00.

Trident Marine, Parramatta River.

New Wave Parramatta River

Anchorage marine, Georges River. Swing mooring.

Tudor Insurance are some excellent brokers who will find you the right insurance. I've ended up with an '83 boat on a swing mooring in western Sydney Harbour, insured through QBE, no survey needed.

I had a very distressing phone call yesterday morning. Magic Carpet was to be carted off to the rubbish dump. Apparently she came up on the beach. Mast broken in two places and a bent rudder. Bukh diesel still excellent! Some damage to the deck but mostly just cosmetic.
This morning I had a call to say that the bloke who has just acquired her is carting her off to a large property near Batemans Bay and has decided to restore her.

That is a sad story for a truly wonderful boat, had I not started with this stable, easy to sail design I might not have continued with keel boats. I am heartened to hear that they have decided to attempt the restoration. I hope they take up the challenge and complete the work, often this is a slow death for boats.

It's in safe hands. Adrian will be going down and sorting out the rudder. I regret not buying it for my kids when it was at a rock bottom asking price.

QBE did mine in qld but on renual this year they wanted mooring inspection certificate

Just a heads up! CLUBMARINE the "specialists" require a value of $1500/foot before they will insure on a mooring WTF!!!! So a 30' boat has to have a value of at least $45K. Are you f%$#&ing kidding me!

A mooring inspection certificate request is virtually standard now. As far as I am aware the need for an inspection and service yearly, and documented proof of this, by a reputable company, is virtually mandatory and a legal requirement. If you cannot prove this and your boat breaks free and runs amok you will be in more strife than Speed Gordon.

Pantaenius are in the same boat as Club Marine - their phone and email service is top shelf in so very politely outlining that they are not interested in insuring anything under $25k value - so go away but thanks for your valued inquiry anyway...................

Hmmm interesting that the RMS will accept a stat dec for proof of inspection but not the insurance company scammers ? And given there's no mooring specs, who gets to say who is a bonafide mooring contractor ?

There are numerous mooring specs published on line see below. Suggest you ask your mooring contractor what they design to. One of the below should be suitable.

Dr Ryan Dunns paper for the QLD gov from 2014 is an excellent discription of various mooring apparatice and cost and an enlighting read, being dated issues such as questions to insurers and enviro test results are, out the window, how things change. I think this passage says it all, " no truly unanimous standards for mooring configurations exist, specialised mooring operators and mooring configurations tend to converge through operational necessity ( Latham et al., 2012) " there's a nice windage per vessel dimension in kg/ lb that's interesting.

Thats the point I was making. We could all easily be mooring contractors and sign off for our insurance, and then we could sue ourselves if it fails !

God help us all if each state government finally get their act together and pass laws and standards for moorings!

Costs will go up as the "mooring contractors" will have to have insurance against their work as well for the whole 12 months!

It surely won't happen in my lifetime............the present NSW and Qld premiers today can't even agree on who called who or didn't or intended to or forgot to or dialed the wrong number or phoned themselves and left a message..............so totally agree god help us............

My assumption when tasking and paying a reputable mooring contractor was that if they complied with relevant standards as for example per the 2 docs I posted before, and the mooring tackle failed hence going to fertiliser in a basket, that their insurance would cover the consequent costs. A yacht I sold a few years ago went up on the bricks in the harbour (Sydney) not long after I sold it and I alerted the new owners who suggested that the mooring contractor would cover the damage and make good the mooring. I don't know if this occurred. I believe the yacht survived the ordeal but that was obviously more due to luck than good engineering.

But of course I now agree that this assumption is not valid.

The NZ link being appropriate for that region - I agree. In that text is the obvious inference that it may not be appropriate for Australia. So is the Gold Coast study appropriate for Australia? I would suggest that both would be appropriate based on the calibre of the companies and persons compiling the reports.

So has Dr Dunns and Latham et al followed through with their epistle to compile a mooring tackle standard for Australia? So as to close the loop and output a solution and not make yet another hand grenade? Appreciate advice and I can then immediately send this to my mooring contractor.

I will follow this up further with RMS tomorrow to try and close it out and provide a solution answer...........but it won't come tomorrow...........will see how this goes and then might call the mooring contractor I use and totally trust.

They did cancel me a few years ago but came back later and asked me to insure with them. They know it's on a mooring. I only want the policy number anyway to use the local slips. I will never be making a claim. It's an insurance company, we are just making donations!
