I'm sure it has been mentioned before but for those who have not seen it, the Brisbane city council is planning on removing sailing vessel access to the Brisbane CBD. The planned navigation height is 12.7m, the same as the captain cook bridge which is of course blocked to all but trailer sailor type vessels. Ideally, they raise the navigation height up to something sensible.

Of course this won't affect most of you directly but it will limit anyone with a cruising slant that may have wanted to check the area out which I can say is a very regular occurrence currently.

Anyway, for anyone that may want to express some displeasure to this can have a for the next few days (until Friday 18th September 2020). See below excerpt:

That's the wrong captain cook bridge in the wrong state (NSW). The one referenced in the original post is in Brisbane Queensland.

Technically, this is not a proposal to ban sailing vessels from Brisbane. It is a proposal for a new bridge linking Kangaroo Point to the CBD. The proposed bridge has a navigational clearance of 12.7m, which is the same as the Captain Cook Bridge Downstream. However, it will effectively bar taller or larger sailing vessels from the moorings by the botanical gardens. I am not opposed to the bridge, but I think it should be higher. The current proposal diminishes Brisbane's maritime heritage by blocking the way to larger boats.

This will make it so sailing boats can not get to the gardens, an internationally recognised for access and restocking
in Brisbane area .

I'm afraid we are considered a minority, so I hope they build the bridge with same height or more than Captain Cook Botany Bay. I can sneak under that one at low tide! Thanks R13 for the official height, my air draught is 15.9m

True. Got my upstream and downstream mixed up, which is pretty embarrassing for a hydrologist like me.

Are any of the moorings opposite the Botanic Gardens ever available? Never seen any not occupied in the 3 or 4 times I have been past in the last few years. I really like the idea of them but if they are always filled with people seeking low rent then they are of no use to visitors passing through.

I assume you are aware that Brisbane city council removed half of the moorings at the gardens, so there are not as many available as there used to be. Having said that, I can tell you that there is about 6 currently empty.

In any case, there will soon be none under the council's plan.

Richard, the 16.6 clearance is HWS so you at 15.9 are good to go anytime. Still looks bloody close when going under though.

Lots of info to read through, thought I had better submit an informed opinion. I had read about the reduced number of moorings, I suppose the first in, no advance bookings makes it difficult for a cruiser to plan on visiting. If i could get out of Melbourne I would like to spend some time on one of those 6 vacant moorings in your lovely river.

looks like the only hope is the inertia that comes with all councils. The footbridge that was going to close off Victoria Harbour in Docklands in Melbourne still hasn't been built after 10 years.

A while back there was a Russian billionaire with his mega yacht in the river anchored out pretty much where this said bridge will go.
Dont think with the bridge being there he could do it again as his yacht would not fit under the bridge.
l don't see it as the best idea for any city to make someone with that sort of economic stimulus potential feel that it becomes just to hard a thing to do to visit, especially in the current climate.

The state government had planned to make the mega yacht visits to the city a regular thing and were wanting the navigation height raised to a sensible level but backed down to the council. So now we will end up with a poorly conceived and implemented hack instead.

I really don't get it when there are the cliffs just up from where it is planed to cross which gives extra height from the get go .
but hey I don't get paid to think this sort of thing through to all possible conclusions.
so it will just be what it will be.

I did a cruise up around there between Story Bridge and the Gardens with a bunch of people on board, they absolutely loved it. It would be such a shame for this to go ahead.

You're welcome shaggy. It is such a sham and a shame as this area gets a lot of visitors anchored off the gardens or tied up to the moorings. Realistically, I know they will ignore all this and build a low height bridge anyway. Sucks though.

Are not rivers state property over which it has absolute authority to manage and author it's navigability??

At or upon which point does the Brisbane City Council exceed the authority of the State Government of Queensland??
