Not sure which is worse this damage to the Canadian boat or Ben Ainslie cutting the front of the Japanese boat off because he wasn't looking where he was going. He would have to be amongst the most experienced racing skippers in the world if not the.
I think a total rethink of the way these yacht races are started is in order because it was never contemplated that boats would be going this fast in a yacht race and the consequences of getting sliced in half by a foil or even just a bow are horrific. Nobody would ever contemplate starting a car race with cars going perpendicular to each other at 60kmh +++ and they have a hell of a lot more occupant impact protection built-in.
Current America's cup boats have an even more horrific dangerous looking foil arrangement but at least they are usually only racing 1 on 1 and you would hope that a skipper was capable of keeping clear of 1 boat. Doesn't protect a hapless soul who might be in the way of them whilst they are practising in a harbour however.
