Most of us put the female gender on our yachts, boats etc but you don't often see a female name on a yacht. We Have Ramona here of course but many boat names you see are conceptual like Fusion, Addiction, Insatiable, Envy, Once More Dear Friends, Heaven Can Wait but you just don't see a lot of yachts with a straight out female name.

I do, but when we got Fusion I learnt the French adamantly refer to their boats as an "it".
I found it quite strange to think of a yacht as an impersonal object, I am sure they have personalities!!

Strange the French, they put gender on a whole host of inanimate objects but they don't put gender on yacht...they do put gender of boats though... le bateau

Nothing is an it in French. Yachts are masculine.

Just to be clear, I am not talking about the language. I am referring to the way the French view a yacht. They found it quite amusing when I referred to the boat as a she. They told me in their eyes a yacht is an it.
They also thought it was wrong to place a coin under the mast when it was stepped out of interest .

"Man of war" square riggers are obviously not females!

my boat name, altho' not female in name, is female in gender ............ and boats in spanish are also masculine in gender, but mine is a "she" for a lot of reasons and always will be she.

There are a few down this way with ladies names

The skipper I crew with had one a few boats ago called Jenny S and there are a couple of wooden boats down here called Lucy and Nancy

I think boats are called 'she' because they encompass humans.....much like 'Mother Earth'.

Seems the whole world has gone "politically correct" with Lloyds List now even saying ships are "it"

I'm a little sad to see the bitchiness referred to creeping into this thread by which was started by Southace... Where are the females?... which I interpreted as warm thoughts towards those few of us girls who post on here occasionally.

I don't find anything derogatory about being called female. I have certainly been called much worse than that. ... and Cisco, I know you are old school and chivalrous, and probably worried we were offended, but I for one was not offended in the least. I was rather quite touched that we were missed. You are right though in that I think it is harder to find "ladies" these days.

Being somewhat an anonymous on these threads, I would think there are more females here than some of us think.

Boadicea comes to mind S.A. she may of been on land but she kick some arse and there's many others

Buy a Peugeot, that will help you feel better in no time at all. BTW, guess what brand of car I drive. It's my third one, I must be sick, but the first one had 650,000 thousand on it when I sold it and the second one was at 375,000, so they must do something right

When I was a kid in Tanzania back in the sixties the East African Safari was an annual event captured everyone's imagination. The roads in those days, (probably still are today), absolutely atrocious and having a vehicle which could get around on them without breaking was the major factor in choice.

Peugot 404's were without a doubt the most competitive in this event.

Not that I can see what that has to do with females although many of my vehicles have been referred to as bitch!
