Ouch . I worry about my rudders hitting stops going backwards at 2 knots let alone 20. That woulda been painful.

The cat was lucky and trawlermen know whats going on, to my knowledge none of the trawlers from here have gone out. Really what sort of bubble would you have to be in not to be aware of the forecast in the age of technology?

Smart people would have viewed the cameras set up at the bar. This bloke is very experienced and has been all around Australia. Not sure why he had to leave under those conditions.

This weather system has been forecast for a week, on every radio station, tv, MetEye, seabreeze etc. as you say must of had a reason to go now. In my experience sailing cats are notoriously under powered for that sort of game

Lucky you can kinda steer a cat with motors forward and reverse....... kinda.

So what would have been the out come with a mono?
Loose a rudder?
Knock down?
Roll over?
Loose the mast?
Not that any mono yacht owners would ever put them selves in danger like that.

I've been of the view that it is best to have the main up when crossing a bar. If you lose the engine you have something to give propulsion and steering.
Interested in what others do?

Way to many variables, but astern surfing is low on the scale of probability if a mono was in the same place and time. Likely end up beam to the sea and rolled like a ball. If you had enough HP then you maybe able to push through ( think GM not bukh )

I agree MB sail hoisted when crossing a bar, unless it's a head wind and tacking room is limited, it's so much easier to haul the sail up in sheltered waters

Yep. Everything dogged shut, main up. Or even a jib if the wind is a reach or from behind and you're feeling lazy.

WTF! Can't believe it didn't flip. Great add for the cat company. Look what our boats can stand up too.
Why would you try that. Where would you go in those conditions anyhow. They've been sailing for 19 years.
Why don't people interview them properly.
So,what the F were you thinking.

There's a 30ft Tri owner in Gippsland who describes being picked up by a wave and surfing abeam through the channel into Lakes Entrance. He reckons it was more embarrassing than frightening.

On the flip side (pun intended) all POB remained onboard. So well done to digging their claws in and staying with the boat.

So often in bar crossings rescuers find them selves searching for the other kind of POBs

Wow what a show. I reckon that cat used 8 of its 9 lives. From what i have been told that trawler lost power and steering on the bar. Captain hit his head and went to hospital and the crew walked away uninjered. It has since been towed off the beach and is now in brisbane.
