Ciao Tigers,

did any of you used a copper coat antifoul on your boats? It sounds promising to do the job once every 5 years instead of taking the boat out every year and apply a soft antifoul. A lot of money to be saved this way. Any opinions? If can be done, where would be the cheapest place in harbour to pull the boat out and do the job? Woolwich dock is asking $1300 for a hard stand. Some of marinas around the harbour will not allow me to do the job by myself!
Any suggestions welcome.

Tiger this is said in the friendliest manner possible, stop trying to find something to spend more money on with your boat, fix the motor and use it . As far as antifoul is concerned, Altex # 4 properly applied, 2 good coats with 3 on the leading edges and waterline should get you at least 2 years, with the occasional wipe down in the water, something you will need to do with coppercoat anyway.

Thank you. Still waiting for engine to be fixed but that will happen soon and I will try to do Sailling every day. In a couple of years I should be more confident.

Hi Serb, I had a good look at copper coat when I bought my boat, a boat I had looked to buy had it applied and the owners had reported good results, 10 years and still going on the one application.

I didn't go ahead with it mostly do to the expense and secondly the risk of potentially less than satisfactory results, you hear mixed reports

The product itself is not cheap plus all the existing bottom coat would need to be removed, most likely by a pro with blasting equipment. Also the application of it is critical to success so I probably would have paid a pro to do that as well instead of risking botching it myself. All that would have made the initial application over 10K maybe over 15k, I didn't get a quote in the end I just opted to re-coat the existing bottom paint.

I think it probably costs 5 times as much as a normal anti foul but hopefully lasts 5 times as long or longer. However you still need to lift your boat periodically and you still need to give it a wipe down every few months as well as already mentioned.

If your planning on updating your boat in the next 10 years I don't see the point, you need to keep the boat for a long time to offset the initial cost and start saving. I am still interested in it but if I go ahead it would probably be done some years from now in a country I am cruising through where the cost to apply it would be cheaper.
