Hi everyone! I'm planning to live aboard a yacht in Williamstown, and I work in the CBD. Is there any way I'd be able to commute daily to the city using the boat's motor? My main concern is finding a place I can moor while at work (roughly 9 to 5).

I've heard that some of the marinas let you tie up all day, as long as it's not overnight? Is this the case?

Thanks for your help!

Hey DrRog, do you know which marina that is? I couldn't find one in Docklands willing to let me live aboard.

Coming from the mainland I am amazed that in Hobart you can tie up at Constitution Dock in the middle of the Hobart CBD for $80 a week for up to10 meters or $122 a week for 10 to 15 meters

I think I might move to Tas! .............shuffle around from anchorage to anchorage around the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and toss in a trip to town every now and then?

Yarra Edge will let you berth during the day for free on a casual basis, as long as you phone ahead. But I expect they'd get pretty cranky if you wanted it to be on a daily basis.

It is lovely "commuting" from Willy to the city on a pleasant morning, but at 10kts from the river mouth to the Westgate, and 5kts from there to the city its a slow trip of at least 45 mins in a powerboat, plus whatever time it takes to get from the marina to work. When I do it I still have to get a tram down Flinders St which adds another 15 mins at least. The weather doesn't affect the time of the trip unless you have trouble berthing in the wind.

The reality is a little less appealing than the dream.

^^^Big city living was complicated 30 years ago which is why I moved from Brisbane to Bundaberg.

My mooring licence in the Burnett River costs me $47.50 per year. My mooring location is six oar strokes or eight on a high tide from the beach where I launch and store my dinghy.

My home is located a 10 minute drive from that beach and a 1 klm walk from the main street post office. My 250 m2 home and 75 m2 are located on a 1012 m2 Res B block.

Yes....I am bragging...... but not really. My home is only showing a $50k capital growth over 10 years and Bundy is high unemployment. I am retired and living is relatively affordable.

We are happy and making ends meet.

Point is .....there are some good opportunities in regional Australia.

Ive thought about it in sydney as I work around the harbour. Its not practical. Using my motorbike is though. Fastest way bar helicopter. Commuting around on boat you live on could become a chore.
