I'm looking to get a new anchor as mine is a bit corroded and wondering what size is correct for my Cav 28?
I understand the displacement is around 2800kgs (although I was told 4000kgs when I bought her).
The plough anchor on her at the moment is 12kgs or 27llb but I'm wondering if I could go down to a 10kg?
Just wondering what other Cav 28 or similar size/displacement boats are using?

A lot will depend on whether your storing the anchor in a well or on the bow. If you had a boat in survey in NSW the CQR anchor is rated at 1. High performance anchors like Rocnas, Spade and Ultra etc are rated as 1.5. This means if your CQR at 12kgs is the right size then a modern anchor of 8 kilos is equivalent. The only advantage CQR have over modern anchors is the ease in storing them in anchor lockers. Rollbar Rocnas are difficult to fit in anchor lockers and that's why they "invented" the Vulcan. It looks just like a cheap version of a spade and I'm sure the dimensions, shape and angles is a coincidence! I would suggest checking the Rocna page for your size requirements, finding the fitment diagrams for that size and make a plywood version to see how it fits on your bow or in the anchor locker.
I would go slightly oversize and that looks like a Vulcan 9kg. All Rocnas are built in China but they have a lifetime guarantee.

When I say a bit corroded I meant a couple of holes so no go with regalvanizing I think.
Its just when you look at anchors they say "suitable for up to 9 metre boat" or whatever but obviously it depends on its displacement also so it's hard to see exactly what is right or not.

And it sits on the bow roller.

go directly to each manufacturer's website. all the ones i've seen have sizing info based on length + displacement...

Depends what you're doing.

We run a 25lb Manson supreme on our Compass 28 and always sleep well.

We see a lot of larger/heavier boats with smaller modern anchors or even standard ploughs. Fine for lunchtime, light conditions and good holding ...... but!

The Manson sets easily and comes up well.

It lives, well secured, on the roller.

The other problem with the Rocna is the rollbar can obstruct your navigation light when bow roller mounted.

Fisher 32, had a 15 kg Rocna (as recommended by a Rocna rep at Sydney boat show, yeah mate we know the boat) that would drag on occasion and nearly always brought up a large ball of mud when retrieved), had enough, bit the bullet and bought a Sarca Excell #5 and couldn't be happier with the performance, and no more mud ball to clean off the anchor and deck.

Adams 28, 3760kg dry, about 5000kg cruise ready.
I had a 35lb Manson CQR, a 10kg Rocna and a 22lb Fortress with 1m 16mm chain, 10m 3/8 chain, 33m 3/8 close link chain and a 33m and a 100m roll of 12mm nylon rode. Most were stored in the cockpit lazarette.
Used the sand anchor for day stops and the Rocna for all other occasions including 35-45kn blows.
The Rocna l consider a brilliant anchor, a cheap insurance! Never slipped, never dragged, set first go at all times. Can not talk of it in high enough terms.
Never had a winch and if it came up with a bit of dirt, well, so what, l washed it off.

The Rocna fitted on my twin bow rollers fine but l never sailed with an anchor on the bow or chains in the anchor locker outside of the Harbour!

You could put a Manson Supreme 15lb on your Cav' 28 and it will never move at anchor.

If a 25lb fits in your anchor locker then get that size if you must, but the 15lb is storm-proof for a boat of that size, and it's really easy to pull up.

16kg Sarca Exel #4 on a 40' , 6000kg, 20mtr chain. I'm with Uncle Bob, to date no dragging and sets first time. Always on the roller in the bay, goes in the anchor locker if heading off shore.
