...handle that is - what were you thinking?

The missing piece had the other 'claw' on it.

Where would one source a replacement without having to purchasing a complete ball valve, or is that even possible? TIA.

(in the meantime I'm guessing a pair of locking pliers or a shifter on the flat of the valve shaft to open/close it - any better suggestions?)

Nasty. Good related article here.

www.iims.org.uk/problems-with-skin-fittings/

Should be able to buy a replacement? - eg;

www.msamako.com.au/stainless-steel-valves

But if the valve and spindle and its thread and nut are still ok it would not be a big deal to make a new handle to fit over the spindle. What is the spindle and nut material - assume bronze and not carbon steel as the broken handle appears to be? Even a piece of brass flat bar drilled and filed to close tolerances should do it? The brass will dezincify and become brittle in time if salt water comes in contact with it but if not should last for a reasonable time. Close fitting tolerances will avoid slop and wear in use. Spray it with CorrosionX?

Locking pliers or shifter will work in the short term but will probably damage the spindle flats and corners and they will become burred.

I would be using a bogey lever / spanner and replacing the cock when next out of the water if that's an indication of the component quantity. A while ago someone posted a failed cock ! The handle was good but the spindle wasn't operating the ball ....... ?

Thanks r13 - good ideas there, and thanks Woko. The cock is a good quality bronze one still working well, but its also the only one that hasn't been replaced(access is a nightmare that may require some cutting of panel(s)) so that was already slated for the next slipping. I sort of knew the handle was failing and hoped it would last, but alas...
An interim jobby will do for now i think

I would use a bit of flat SS bar. Cut the square hole in the side with a mini grinder and weld an end piece to close off the hole and grind the whole thing flat. Wont have the stop part but that does not matter.

I would just buy another valve and take the handle off it.

So i open SB and get this advertising- is the universe trying to tell me something?, or maybe it's just the vagaries(read:algorithms) of the internet.
Made me chuckle

Yes agree the algorithms of the internet, what a complete PITA.

Back to the original post - in the good old days Whitworths sold valves with red circular (not lever) handles and green circular handles - the red corroded within a few years while the green lasted a lot longer due to appropriate materials.

A bit of cutting, bending, drilling and filing - and heatshrink for good measure.
Daresay it could last longer than the original!
Thanks for the tip r13.
