This photo was taken two hours ago. No wounded insurance companies do not want to insure boats moored here. I know another cat that did a quick run to Mackay marina and got in. Much safer than sitting at anchor in Shute Harbour. They have had plenty of warning.

Yep that's where the uninsured boats remain usually boats that are worth nothing and can't enter marinas When Yasi came through they where there in the evening but gone in the morning sunk or smashed on the rocks. My guess is Airlie beach is going to get smashed with this incoming cyclone.

Gusts to 65 knots at Hamilton now. Bit unkind to say the boats are worth nothing. There are plenty of good boats in Airlie and Schute. There are a couple of good funk holes for cats, not so much monos. Maybe Cid.

Not being unkind times may have changed but there use to be quite a few unseaworthy boats with people just squatting on them. Can only be insured if your boat is seaworthy and tied up in the marina during cyclone.

Nuts to stay in Shute Harbour. I'd be in Gulnare Inlet, or the very end of Nara Inlet. Much more secure.

Wow, it will be a lottery for those boats. My boat is in Bowen harbour and I'm feeling rather nervous to say the least. I'm in Switzerland right now so there is nothing I can do, just wake up in the morning and see what happened.
Fingers crossed that the damage to the local community is not too bad.

Really hope your yacht isn't damaged Dexport. All the best wishes for you and other boat owners there. Do you have anyone keeping an eye on your yacht?.

Aussie cyclone chasers just showed a bit of the Bowen boat harbour on there face book feed. That's not so good news your boat is there dexport, hopefuly you have good insurance. The better outcome will be if she survives th Storm.

Nope. There were boats lost in both anchorages. too may bullets and Nara a bit deep to get enough scope in a blow and Gulnare has very soft mud, Ok normally but not in a blow with the bullets down the length of the inlets. There is a bolt hole opposite the north end of Long Island for a couple of boats and a really good one if you have a cat in the mangroves north of Sawmill Bay.

Have a look at what happened between 9:40 and 9:50 - 97 knots ESE to 95 knots WNW in 10 minutes followed by a gust of 142 knots! I hope everyone on Hammo, Hayman and the mainland is OK.

My brother's boat is on pile mooring at Bowen... I'm worried for it... a lot!

Just saw on the TV a yacht called "Green Nomad" thrown up on the rocks. Looks like steel. She just bounced along with no sign of puncture, you could be forgiven for thinking she could just bounce off again and sail way without any damage.

My mate who purchased the Duncanson 37 up there about a month ago has, almost without doubt, lost the boat.

His representative up in Airlie attempted to tow it into the little creek south of Boat Haven at Airlie - a proven bolt hole - only to find the narrow and very tidal mouth of the creek obstructed by a dirty great barge belonging to the owner of the boatyard up that same creek.

A few other boats were attempting to access the creek as well.

The concensus is that the owner of this boatyard did this deliberately to deter boats from anchoring in 'HIS' creek.

MSQ Airlie Beach were not interested. So bloody insular and parochial up there...small towns, small minds. The MSQ guy was adamant that Mr E.... was simply making preparations for his own vessels in preparation for the cyclone.

After the lockdown, NO vessels were permitted to move. However, the barge, lo and behold, had been moved back up the creek on Sunday morning.

Disasters can bring out the very best and WORST in people.

Hope I'm wrong, but R.I.P. Wyandra.

Green Nomad was definitely steel we saw her around the traps up here.

Did he manage to get insurance? A lot of mud around that creek and a strong boat she still maybe fine .

I went through two cyclones in that marina, Yasi and Anthony no where near as bad as what they have just received but I removed the furling head sail and hitched the boom bag sail in both experiences .

First Cyclone I stayed aboard and experienced 60 to 70 knots but when Yasi came through we booked the hotel over looking this spot and my yacht and my mates yacht survived.

Some footage I have seen this morning over looking the same spot showed yachts close to my old berth with head sails unfurling and yachts healing over with gusts and sails shredding and one boat had a tender in the water! is this careless or uneducated cruises in the area or just bad timing?

That is a monster low pressure ! Hope no lives are lost ! Hang in all you crew up there !

Yeah the one in the clip has a tender along behind as it goes into the breakwater. May have fallen off the davits but still wouldn't think it'd be the best way to leave your boat in the circumstances. Who knows what other situations the owner may have been facing though...

I seen some live footage of the boats in the end berths right next to the breakwater that boat is heading into. I did see a yacht there with head sail schreading and tender in the water today on tv. As I lived there for 2 years I was supprised it was left like that. I know from previous experience that some come in once the harbourmaster and marina staff have gone home .
