Hi, want to antifouling my 31' sailing boat, but there is no marina around Sydney harbour allowing for DIY. Any idea where is the closest place that allows DIY that is not far away from Sydney harbour?

Castlecrag Marine allows weekend DIY slipping, with caveats around noise etc. Up friday, back in monday. If you just want to slip, scrub and antifoul they are a good option.

Also Woolwich marine at hunters hill. dm me and I can share the quote they gave me. quite a long lead time though.

This Balmain slipway has DIY weekend work indicated to be possible on their website - guess best to call them to see if DIY is still current.

Tried Balmain. Seems no go atm as having trouble with council. Or so they told me.

I've heard Balmain had to shut down their slipway on short notice (due to council), leaving quite a few yachties without a haulout - and no 'weekend warrior' action. Lead times at nearby yards have increased as a result. Woolwich Dock is currently booking for March or later.

That's not good. Don't want to make a meal of it but the reality is that Sydney Harbour is a working port - google that to find numerous articles. I lost track of time in the Noakes floating dock saga but now see that they are underway which is a good result. Trust this can continue.

My understanding of most councils is that home building construction and renovation work - with the associated inherent noise - can occur from 7am-1pm on Saturdays and that's it for the weekend. Is this correct? It seems entirely reasonable. So if that was applied to slipways the weekend warrior would easily be accommodated and I would guess that's what Castlecrag Marine have done - I have slipped there a fair while back and they are a top shelf operation.

So DIY slip and do all the noise emitting work in these Saturday 8hrs and then the rest of the weekend is hand sanding and more afouling coats..........

I well realise that the Noakes floating dock debate included the visual aesthetics debate of the thing rising out of the water with something taller in it..........glory, the shock and horror of it all.............

I have no business association with any marina business just want to be able to DIY slip in the west harbour.

The floating dock is unfortunately over, the locals and North Sydney council won in the land and environmental court.

Just as an FYI though, for my 22ft boat, Gladesville Bridge Marina charge about $100 more to do the lot than I was paying for a lift and stand over the weekend at Woolwich. Factor in all the paint, consumables and most importantly time, I reckon it's well worth the tiny extra amount, even if the finish may not be as thorough as I'd do.

Booked in there for Monday coming about 2-3 weeks ago... Main issue was waiting for a convenient tide.

Been happy with both services, mind. Woolwich dock always treated me like a valued customer, even when my junky old boat was being pulled up beside multi squillion dollar yachts, and Gladesville offer a great "turnkey" service, where I just drop off and pick up, no hassle whatsoever.

If you do it yourself you get to do it properly.
I paid for two coats of Altex #5 and for the first time let them do it at Marmong Pt. I went away for less than 2 hours and they had two coats on when I got back supposedly. They had missed a few spots between the skeg and the rudder which I asked them to fix.

Unfortunately I beached my boat getting out of Lake Macquarie 10 days ago less than 5 months after antifouling and noticed barnacles and no new blue antifouling on the prop supports. I doubt all areas had two coats and in any event the coats were probably thin as hell. The front of the Keel and other leading edges should probably have 3 anyway.

Maybe tell them one coat red one coat blue then watch haha. Also they told me it would take 10 L so I should have asked for the leftovers after watching for the whole time to make sure it all went on.

Our recent anti foul for the Santana 22 was $1800. That included the paint as well as pick up and return to our mooring. The yard was about 30 to 40 minutes up river from our mooring.

Previously a DIY yard cost us nearly $1000 for the lift out and we supplied paint and a lot of hard yakka.

I like the new arrangement.

That is awfully dodgy. This is from the Atex No 5 Data sheet

Dry Times (75 ?m DFT / 25?C / 50% RH): To Recoat - Minimum 4 hours - Maximum Not critical To Launch - Minimum 8 hours - Maximum Not critical

How an expensive yard can undercut the minimum time in winter astounds me. It should take at least 4 hours on a 25 degree day before recoating. A marina should follow basic data sheet recommendations.

I don't like getting others to do my antifouling because I am very careful with my boat. For me, it is a great opportunity to carefully go over the entire hull surface and ensure all is fine. That said, I can't slip in Lake Mac because my cat is too wide and DIY is actively discouraged.

Here's my two cents worth.
Minimum and maximum re coat times are published by manufacturers for good reason. There is always a bit of room for fudging here and there but if you ever have an issue and make a claim against the manufacturer for poor performance of their product what is the first thing they are going to ask??
It's doable with a weekend haul out. Clean and prep spot prime Friday, first coat Saturday and second coat Sunday including additional coats on WL and leading edges. Back in first thing Monday.
I am fortunate to be able to do my own work as much as I would love to throw someone the keys and pick the boat up a few days later. I know if I do it, it will be done right and I usually do other jobs while hauled out. I maximise the time on the hardstand. There is also the satisfaction of getting to know every part of your boat and the cold beer or three when finished on Sunday. Sit back, have a look and be happy with what you and your helpers have achieved.
I go to Woolwich Dock and have done for a number of years. They are very helpful and friendly. Thanks to a cancellation (Thanks Azure305) I'm doing mine first weekend in September. Prior to this my wait time for a haul out there was 7 months.
Don't get me started on the loss of our working harbour. I have been around Port Jackson for over 50 years and witnessed the changes. The loss of the Noakes floating dock to Sydney is a blow to the marine industry especially commercial and defence vessels. I wonder how the NIMBY's will feel when they can't book a charter boat for NYE or Vivid because it can't get a docking date and slips out of survey. I know of commercial vessels travelling hundreds of miles to carry out survey and docking work interstate. Try and imagine the additional cost and downtime. However most boat yards north of here are somewhat cheaper.
Close down all the tyre places and mechanics in Sydney and see what happens. Just saying......
I will document and cost my slipping in a couple of weeks and post the results. I am also going to give Altex #5 Plus a go this time.
