Hi All,Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
After the recent purchase of my Van Der Stadt 24 I have had the back-stay adjustment soft wire break and someone has taken off with the pulleys etc.The boat is currently on a handstand and needs to be moved next month to Nedlands.

Its basically a single line back-stay with a pulley at the base to which a soft wire line is attached to the starboard side runs up to the pulley on the single line then back down to the rope adjuster on the port side (I have attached a rough drawing on how it used to be set up)




Can anyone recommend a good way to re rig this?
I have been looking through the Harken/Ronstan rigging diagrams and there is a similar setup but not the same.

I have the same set up. If the blocks have been stolen you could set it up the same way but instead of using wire (which will have less strength than the back stay, also the wire block will have a lower loading figure than the "soft" wire), you could use spectra or similar (dyneema??) which needs to have a higher loading than the backstay.

Then the blocks will have to have equal or higher loading figures than the backstay or the tensioner tackle.

I have the same arrangement , the only difference is, my deck eye bolts are a half a meter apart,
reason for this arrangement, is simple,
the tiller rudder doesn't allow centre attachment of one piece backstay.

How is backstay tensioned now, make sure forstay is not bending mast forward.
Set up emergency tension to the backstay, for the trip.

If you not saling, would't worry too much, providing the rest of the rigging is ok.

The most marine shops can swaige new wire.

If you not planning drop the mast often, then I would skip rope adjustment.

The distance of my deck eye-bolts is the width of the stern. This shouldn't be a problem?

I am planning on setting this up prior to sailing. At the moment there is just a temporary rope to hold it back.

Being in the swan river and wanting to travel to Rottnest i will have to drop the mast when passing under Freemantle Bridge

I have 2 small blocks 1: 4 and single pulley on the end of backstay ..total 1:8
It's more than enough, think should be enough on your boat too.

This backstay arrangement is need it, we can drop the mast.
Have you done it before ? Get extra hands !

Setting up, good idea, because the most ropes stretches and mast flex.
You wont prevent that.

What size Dyneema/Spectra do you run ? between the blocks?

Maximum 6mm spectra for that boat. Have a look at the M27s down at TCYC, you can see the setup they use. there are 2 on trailers there, one has adjusters on both sides and the other next to it has an adjuster on one side only. If you are not racing just the one is sufficient

We ask Cisko what Spectra to use,
it depends on what blocks you have or going to buy.

Mine is 8 , maybe 10 mm black nylon.
