Watched the Robert Redford movie "All is lost" on DVD last night. Now I knew what to expect, I had read pages of reviews from the Pommie yachting forums and was aware I would be fighting the urge to scream at the TV screen. But it was really bad! The acting and camera work was first class. There was pretty much everything wrong with his actions and reactions and I found myself disappointed when he did not drown at the end.
Could not use this film as a training tool and say do not do this because some info will stick. His immediate action should have been to shore up the hole, cushions/furniture on the inside, spare headsail hauled around the hull on the outside. This all happened in the first few minutes. Really the movie should have been about 30 minutes long. He spent more time shaving and eating than preserving his vessel.

And where did he find all that great weather!

Yes, it is a terrible movie. So many inaccuracies that it is just too hard for a sailor to "suspend the disbelief" which you are supposed to do in a movie. Starts at the first scene with sharks circling a liferaft. Yeh, they new Robert Redford was in there, and they just wanted to have a brush with fame.....

I was going to give Ramona a red thumb for bringing up this film again. Instead I write that I watched the Monty Python special the other day........ This is a dead parrot. The parrot is no more.

Ha you want a laugh?

'Windrider' was on C31 on the weekend, Nicole Kidman, Tom Burlinson, pastel blue wetsuits and mullets as far as the eye can see.

Filmed off WA, all of the long shots in the surf were in 30+ knots, then for the close up action, suddenly it was flat water and maybe 8-10 knots if that.

Even my kids picked it up..

He did drown. Well that was my interpretation of the ending.

Actually that was the only real part of the movie. Once the dinghy has been inflated for a couple hours bait fish and other small critters gather. Under them and in the near vicinity will be a school of dolphin fish. Under that the other species in the food chain are various tunas hassling the dolphin fish, in the movie they had a barracuda! Below this are sharks. Every so often they chase each other about. Redford was pulling in a dolphin fish when the shark grabbed it.

Oh yes, that's a movie I want to see as well. I'm particularly keen to know if Fiji has deported him yet.

The ending was ambiguous; I think it can be interpreted either way. But by the end (actually, within about 5 minutes) you're beyond caring.

I think that was the hand of god, or the devil, I'm not quite sure. Are they both right handed?

Wish I'd read this thread before hiring the bloody thing. My fourth entertainment movie since 2008.

Very disappointed!

Will stave off movies altogether now.

My wife has a video library in her shop and this movie is in it.
Allot of people want to talk about it as they know we have a boat. It doesn't take much explaining to convince people (non sailors) that the movie is Hollywood theatrical fiction. Its a bit like a submariner stomaching a sub movie,,,,,,,, Ping,Ping,Ping!

No don't do that mate. Get hold of "The Lucky Lady" with Gene Hackman, Burt Reynolds and Liza Minelli.
