When I installed AIS on my cat a few years back I also joined the Marine Traffic website.
Marine Traffic sends me an email when I depart port and arrive at port.
It's worked perfectly for over two years.

On Friday I received an email saying my cat (my MMSI number) had arrived at the Port of Darwin.
I am pretty sure my boat is still on my swing mooring in Melbourne.

I assume the email is just a Marine Traffic website error or could someone else be using my MMSI number?
I rang AMSA and they said they don't know what happened and of course the MT web site is nothing to do with them.

Anyone else had this problem?

Hi Rob,
MMSI numbers, assigned by AMSA, are usually entered into equipment (eg AIS transponders, VHF tedious with DSC) manually, so there is a significant potential for error.

I'm would think AMSA's system of MMSI assignment would be automatic and duplication of MMSI's would not be possible. I'm sure when you reported your situation, they would check carefully that duplication hasn't occurred.

I think someone has inadvertently entered your MMSI, so I'd try to track down the owner & inform him of the error.

regards,
allan

Could be a duplicate from someone like this idiot who registers his AIS with "fake" MMSI number. Starts at 2:45.
