After years of saving I have recently put a offer on a 41ft Alan Payne with a draft of 6ft 2.

I have the dream of quitting my job in the near future to sail north to Asia with my partner and see where the winds take us.

I am going to rent a slip at Kawana Marina (Sunshine Coast) and move on-board the boat while I get the boat ready for my trip.

I will have a few weeks before I can move onto the boat after purchase!!

I just wanted to find out how I will be with my draft and is there anywhere safe to anchor up for a few weeks before I move into the marina.

6'2 is a deep draft do you haves some pics of your yacht? be prepared to anchor out the back of most anchorages, which can be a little enoying if you want to get out of swell. Congrats on your new pod and welcome to the forum.

There is limited room in the river and the authorities are clamping down on people over staying the number of days you can anchor in the river. Not sure exactly the number of days you are allowed to stay, but I am sure someone else will know. I do not think they are having much success enforcing it. Personally I would head down into Moreton bay and enjoy the couple of weeks. Plenty of things to do and places to go.

I've heard recently that the number of days you can live on board in the Mooloolaba river is ZERO. As Jode5 said, Morton Bay would be a better option until your berth becomes available at Kawana.

My Delta Anchor doesn't work very good in Morton Bay mud, but my Rocna works a treat.

Make sure you do your first pass along the canal to Lawries at high tide, with a 6'+ draught you might tag bottom in a couple of places

Some years ago I took a 7' 2" draught yacht in and out of Lawrie's Marina on a high tide with out bottoming. With most fin keel yachts they will hang up even if you are only 4" short on depth.

Took my 6+ ft draft to Lawries last Friday for a 2pm lift and it was only half tide. Had the eye on the depth sounder and saw no real issues. But the cannel may have been dredged recently.

It will be good to know the source of the "zero days" statement as I can regularly see people living at anchor in Mooloolaba without any issues. Even more, there are boats left at anchor with no visible occupants left there for many days if not months.
BTW I want to say Hi to everyone, I recently bought a folkboat from a lovely lady and sailed it from Scarborough to Kawana a couple of months ago, currently moored at the local marina.

The policy is zero overnight stays, but it is variably policed. Get in late and leave early and you are OK.

We always overnight in the river when travelling north or south, and there are invariably dozens of boats anchored in The Pond, just south of The Wharf complex. Most of these boats look like they've been there for months. This is recent from Google Maps, and would be typical.

Exactly, I don't know where the policy mentioned in this thread is written, but surely there are several boats not adhering to it. Makes me think that there is actually not such policy...

Well good luck with that. They tried to force me into a marina a few months back. I went outside and anchored inshore from the entrance, it was an OK night for weather, so no harm done. The boats that are almost permanents are not liveaboards.

Most of those boats have been there for years, ive had mine there for over a year. You are allowed to anchor there for ever as long as its registered
But if your a local you can only sleep on boat for 2 nights. If your traveling past you can stay 10 nights

If that is the case I would assume I could anchor my yacht there and if I did WAGS and SAGS regularly I would get no grief from MSQ.
