Reading the excellent Sandyachting by Andy Parr, I've Always been intrigued by Peter Shelton's crabber.

The main feature of this yacht - pretty popular in the first Sixties, together with the tripod, both designed for smooth airfield runways - was the sail/boom and the chassis were linked together. There was no sheet, so to the only way to adjust the angle of the yacht to the wind was playing with steering. Indeed, all the 3 wheels were independent, the 2 front wheels hand operated by tillers and the rear one by a foot pedal. Not an easy job, I guess.

Some years ago I wrote to Ian Dibdin, who sailed some of these yachts in their days. Ian was as usual very kind, replying with a letter full of information (and, unfortunately, full of phrasal verbs that are not so friendly to me if we're talking about mechanics...) By the way, his last suggestion was to build an RC Crabber, so I'm going for it. You can find full articles at ruotenelvento.wordpress.com/

Ciao - Enrico

I am liking the look of this project and your methodology, that is, build a model before you build the real thing.

It reminds me of that great old movie with Jimmy Stewart, Hardy Kruger, Richard Attenborough, Ernest Borgnine, Peter Finch and a bunch of other great actors, "The Flight of the Phoenix".

There was that moment when they all realized Hardy Kruger, the aeroplane designer, had only ever designed model aeroplanes.

My "projects" to do list.
Ahh its, Penny Farthing, solid wing for yacht, then a crabber, but only if the wife doesn't find out.

Don't want to hijack this thread.
It was the "Berminator" of yours, that got me all worked up about solid wings "AUS230".
I just loved the clips and pics that "US772" posted as well.

If anyone has plans for a "Crabber" I would be very interested.

Also curious as to the design of the rack in the back corner of your second photo "veladaterra".
What's it used for?

Will be skinned soon, it's a bookcase with shelves like wings. I love to build stuff inspired by the Golden Age of aviation like this armchair

My building list: the crabber RC, a speedsail (or better a windskate), then the wing sail

having seen a crabber sailing, I would suggest that you avoid the pain of dissapointent and move on. having built a speed sail I would suggest that you be prpared for injuries.. I built 5 before I got the steering right. I then realized i was crossing a salt lake at 45kph without bodyarmour.lots of bodyarmour
its for sale, cheap, so i dont get tempted to try it again
