Hi guys this is my first post just looking for some tips in general or any advice really,

I have been looking for a new hobby to keep me busy and was thinking about building a land yacht to take to the beach every now and then. I am fairly handy and have plenty of space/tools to build it so hoping it will be a fun challenge. Was thinking of making it with mild steel for the frame but unsure about what would be best for the wheels on the sand? so some help for the wheels would be great. And was also thinking of putting in pedals? It will be probably be basic in terms of the body/shape and mast etc.

So really just looking for any pointers or advice from you guys to help me get going?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I designed and built my own first landyacht pretty recently. one of my biggest mistakes was that I made the frame as stiff as possible. I found out afterwards on this forum some chassis flex is important to be able to ride out gusts without either flipping over or being forced to let out your sail and lose power. Just something to keep in mind if you choose to design your own. I don't regret designing my own, but I now realize that the lake lefroy mini is simpler to build, easier to transport, and much faster than mine. Good Luck and have Fun!

The "Lefroy mini" has all the head scratching already worked out for you. Very easy to adapt to what you can scrounge up.

They go like the wind and handle really well. Most importantly they pack/break down into a small area.

This was a Friday effort on our local Pink Lake by Greg's mini in 18 knots of wind.

I agree with chook about the Lefroy Mini. Clean, simple and still very competitive yacht.

Thanks a lot guys I'm just drawing up some rough designs at the moment and referencing the "Lefroy Mini" for some help. Has anyone ever added pedals to their design? Or any sort of chain system? Was just thinking of maybe adding pedals for those times when there is little wind.
