Heading to Perisher for the season to work. I have been kiting on the water for 1 season, am pretty confident. I have a 9m Switchblade. What do people think about this kite for snowkiting and will anyone be at perisher this season to meet & Kite with?

not going to start the old topic - but in the snow a foil is more practical if you tour around a bit. your switchblade will of course get you going have just as much fun as anyone.

up the road to charlottes is a couple of spots {watch for creeks}and the top and behind of charlottes is a good option when you get the time. around perisher not much really, you can try next the carpark if you're desperate but the snow is crud full of icy boot holes and gusty. climb over the back over the quad is your best option about halfway down the other side. be carefull though here there are tree stumps and rocks about

Hi, I'm working at Charlotte Pass again this year. I don't kite but windsurf and take lots of shots of the guys. I have touring skis so can go backcountry. I would love to get some photos so let me know if you're kiting.

Be really, really careful of gusts and rotors around Perisher/Spencers creek.
As it's at a lower alititude the snow conditions are variable.
In your position I'd be catching the Cat (or chook-footing) up to Charlottes resort , then head up to the pass itself and about 500m south, or Stillwell range, wind much smoother there, and you won't have to worry about cars/toboggans/pedestrians/skiers/trees/etc

Just to support the others, from your base at Perisher, I'd be trying for the top of Charlottes. Take the chair to the top and and walk over the range heading south east. The world is your oyster!! A couple of years ago we took the overland cat which can also incorporate a lift ticket at Charlottes Pass. We had a ball.

In more recent years we have gone to Thredbo. We have caught the chair to the top and then launched our kites about 400m from top station in a SE wind or walked or in my case used my alpine touring skis (similiar to cross country but can also lock in the ski boot) to get to higher ground NW towards Seaman's Hut or SW behind Ramshead range. All these areas are absolutely superb in most winds.

Last year we caught a SE at 12 knots from top station and were on top of Mt Kosciuszko in 25 minutes!!!. That was a real buzz! See pic

Please get out there and have a blast, but, if you are new to the game, take someone who is experienced in Backcountry travel. (There are Senior staff at Jindabyne NPWS office who want to ban snowkiting...we don't want to give them an excuse to do so!)

G'day Pat. Nice summary of locations on the map. I hadn't realised that I was repeating myself with story and pics from last Sept....old age I guess!!!

Hope to see you out in the back country again this year. That shot of the four of us on Mt Kos last year was worth going up for, even if I got a tad overpowered at one point

im based in jindabyne for the season with plans to kite board every day the wind and weather is good.

ive been snowboarding for about 15 years, lived in canada for about 10 seasons. been snowmobileing for 6 years using the snowmobile to access the snowboarding terrain.

so now i want to do the same here in oz using the kites for transport. so im very very keen to kite as much and will be doing it full time. i work for myself thru the internet so i will be around on the snow lots.

i'll be in jindy in the next few days until october.

theres a really good spot on the eastern side of ramshead. Its a bowl that sort faces NE. Its got a few perfect faces in w or NW winds where the kite will sit out in front of you near the edge zone - as you ride teh fall line the kite is depowered and just follws you down with minimal pull on your harness. at teh bottom you can just edge against the kite and in one tack your back at teh top to lay some fresh lines next to you old ones. Also its nice and close to Thredbo - all downhill in case you break a line or hurt yourself or the weather comes in unexpectantly. one of favourite sessions out of threders was here last season.

for the less adventurous (not many snowkiters in this category) the area around kosi lookout (top of the gully above thredbo basin) is really fun in most winds except S.

Kitethrills and crew are heading to NZ this year. We are going to Mt Olympus which I think has not been kited before - none of the locals ive spoken to know of anyone hitting it up with a kite.
