Greetings, We are a couple from Seattle, WA. state, the other WA. Planning a trip to Perth for next early December. If we stay in central Perth, are most of the beaches accessable, say with a one hour drive, probably kite from Safety Bay to Lancelin. Sounds like Lancelin would be a couple hours drive, is it better to try to find accommodations there? Any suggestions. Also beaches, we are solid intermediates, want to stay away from the crowds of swimmers, like some surf, will have a surfboard but also flat water. I know some beaches are safer when you are not use to local hazards, we like open beaches for launches, no high tension wires... Any definite beaches to avoid? Any need for a shorty or 1 mil. wetsuit that time of year. We travel with everything from a 5 to a 14 meter, I know the 14 may not be used but have been on it in places that are suppose to blow, like Brazil. Thanks for any imput. Ken
Unless you prefer to look like a seal in which case our friendly 5m great whites will appreciate your efforts.. Water temp is warm enough for boardies possibly with a rashie only.
Look on the waksa.org website for beach details
Speak with the local shops when you get here
KSS AKS WA SURF
They will sort you out will everything you require.
7,8,9,10's are the most popular size for that time of season.. Depends on if it La nina's again... Avg wind 18-25..
G'day Mate, probably better off staying some were around Fremantle, which is 20 minutes south of Perth on the coast. Are You looking for flat water or surf? Maybe even consider the south west Margaret River for some surf, Augusta 20 minutes south of Margaret River is great for flat water, Blackwood river but it is a 3 hour drive from Fremantle.
WA is a big state which has almost limitless kiting potential along our coast. Quite honestly, if you are coming here for kiting goodness as your primary objective, then I'd forget the city.
ALL of the city locations are crowded with noobs and rock stars, it's mayhem at most places and certainly not waves worth enduring the crowds for.
My suggestion is to drop into Perth for your first night, grab whatever supplies you need and then head north out of the city. Look to play anywhere and everywhere between Lancelin and Geraldton. "Lano" is good and can be fairly uncrowded, has heaps of empty beaches with clear water, soft sand, outer reefs with real waves and decent accommodation for all levels of budget.
Going further north will get you to Wedge, Cervantes, Jurien Bay, Dongara, Green Head/Leeman, Point Moore, Geraldton and Coronations. There are sleepy little towns in all of these locations with food, accom etc available. All of these locations are usually VERY windy (7m kite) and are within 4.5 hrs of Perth. In many of those locations you'll be the only kiters there and conditions can be epic.
You only really kite in Perth if you have to. Do some more research and Google Earth is your friend. ;-)
If you need additional info, drop into our shop in Scarborough and we'll sort you out as best possible.
