I am headiing down to dunsbrough for easter and would like to do a bit of kiting i was just wondering if any one can point me in the right dirction for some spots and if there is a good wind around or will i just be wasting my time as i am just a beginer an want to use every chance i can to get out and give it a go any advice would be appreciated cheers
hi rev i'm not a local, but rather than you feeling in the dark i'll throw in my 2 bob. safest and best place for you to think about kiting is a couple of km's to the east of the dunsborough town site in geographe bay if there is a decent NWer (have a look on google maps and you can work it out). some sand bars offshore and pretty shallow (still a bit choppy) with a sandy beach make it safe from that aspect, however since it would be kiting on basically winter winds with the NWer pre-empting a southerly change, keep a good eye on the conditions and only go out if you feel safe - also check if there are other kiters and windsurfers out, or if they head in maybe have a good think about why - better yet ask em. as often quoted on the breeze, winter winds are a whole new ball game in kiting, and not usually suited to beginners when solo kiting. on that note i wouldn't recommend kiting on the margies side as a beginner in a SWer - again, winter winds with swell over there and you will be out of your league i think. consider a day trip to augusta with your gear and suss where the locals there kite if no fronts are coming through and cape leeuwin graph is showing seabreezes everyday still - might be pretty busy over easter though. also think about looking in at bunbury and the leschenault estuary on your way down and/or home if there is a SWer. all good fact finding missions for future kiting if you don't take the kite down this time. personally, i'd through the surfboards in and find a wave or 100 all weekend with the masses, unless the forecast looked honking! safe trippin
